  • Patent number: 9845669
Abstract: For hydrocarbon recovery from a reservoir of bituminous sands, steam and a multi-function agent are injected into the reservoir for mobilizing bitumen in the reservoir to form a fluid comprising hydrocarbons, water and the multi-function agent. The fluid is produced from the reservoir. The multi-function agent may comprise an organic molecule that reduces viscosity of oil and the interfacial tension between oil and water or a gas or rock in the reservoir, and has a partition coefficient favoring solubility in oil over water and a partial pressure in the reservoir allowing the organic molecule to be transported with steam as a vapor. The multi-function agent may comprise a solvent for reducing viscosity of oil and a surfactant for reducing interfacial tension, where both the solvent and surfactant are transportable with steam as vapor.

    Assignee: Cenovus Energy Inc.
    Inventors: Ryan Miller, Khalil Zeidani
  • Publication number: 20150345270
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure involve the production of hydrocarbons from segregated reservoir compartments. Thermal recovery processes within one compartment are used so as to provide thermal energy to a second, adjoining but distinct compartment, increasing fluid pressures within the second compartment to drive hydrocarbons from the second compartment to the first compartment, so that hydrocarbons originating from the second compartment may be produced from the first compartment.

  • Publication number: 20130081808
Abstract: A process of increasing recovery rate of hydrocarbon from a reservoir of bituminous sands is disclosed. The process comprises softening bitumen in a region in the reservoir to generate a fluid comprising a hydrocarbon, to allow the fluid to drain by gravity from the region into a production well below the region for recovery of the hydrocarbon; and providing vapour of a compound to the region, and allowing the compound to disperse and condense in the region. The compound is represented by wherein (i) m is 1, and A is —NH2 or —N(H)CH2CH2OH; or (ii) m is 1 or greater than 1, and A is —OR1, R1 being an alkyl group. A mixture comprising steam and vapour of the compound for injection into the reservoir and a system for recovery of hydrocarbon from the reservoir are also disclosed.
