  • Patent number: 4795391
Abstract: A method of forming aligned apertures in the electrode plates of an electron gun which includes a plurality of electrode plates at least one of which is preapertured and at least another is unapertured. A boring tool, such as an electric-discharge machine, is sized to fit snugly within the aperture in the preapertured electrode plate. The boring tool is inserted through the aperture in the preapertured electrode plate whereby the plate aligns the tool in a position of concentricity. The tool is activated to form a precision concentric aperture in the unapertured electrode plate.

  • Patent number: 4771216
Abstract: A color cathode ray tube system is disclosed that has a color tube with a phosphor screend. The system includes yoke means for deflecting the beams while introducing a beam-astigmatizing quadrupole field. A three-beam, in-line electron gun includes cathode means for developing the beams, and three focus lens means for receiving the electron beams and forming three focused electron beam spots at the screen of the tube. The focus lens means each has a plurality of electrode means spaced along a lens axis parallel to the other lens axes and parallel to a gun central axis, at least two of which lens axes are off-axis with respect to the gun central axis. Electrostatic quadrupole-developing means are so configured and arranged as to develop a quadrupole field in the path of each of the beams when appropriately excited, and convergence means are effective to converge the off-axis beams when appropriately excited.

  • Patent number: 4704565
Abstract: An electron gun system according to the invention comprises means including cathode means for developing an electron beam. Main focus lens means, which has a plurality of electrode means situated on a common axis, provide for receiving the electron beam and forming a focused electron beam spot at the screen of the tube. Means are provided for developing and applying to the electrode means potentials effective to form one or more focusing field components between the electrode means. The lens means is so structured and arranged as to cause to be formed between adjacent electrode means at least one focusing field component which is asymmetrical and effective to significantly divert a passed beam from a straight-line path through a predetermined angle. A first of the plurality of electrode means comprises focus electrode means adapted to receive focus voltages for establishing the focal distance of the beams.

  • Patent number: 4529910
Abstract: A high-performance electron gun is disclosed capable of forming an ultra-small beam spot. The gun has a series of apertured electrodes of various dimension for receiving a range of electrical potentials for forming the beam spot on a cathodoluminescent screen located a predetermined throw distance from the end of the gun. Because of its capability in forming relatively small spot sizes of the order of ten mils or less, the gun finds application in high-resolution monitors, projection television tubes and in cathode ray tubes operating on the beam index principle.

  • Patent number: 4469987
Abstract: A high-resolution color television electron gun is disclosed for use in a high-brightness cathode ray tube having an unsegmented cathodoluminescent screen for producing a monochromatic image. The electron gun provides three horizontally oriented in-line beams lying in the deflection plane of the tube and converged into substantial coincidence on the screen. The diameters of the beams and hence resolution of the monochromatic image is inversely related to the magnitude of the beam currents. The gun includes associated cathode means and grid electrode means for forming each of the beams. A main focus lens for each of the beams includes at least a focusing electrode and an accelerating electrode for receiving a predetermined pattern of applied voltages for establishing beam-forming and accelerating electrostatic fields. The magnitude of the applied voltages are such that the beam currents are relatively low providing for small beam diameters and consequent high resolution.
