Abstract: A method for preventing unwanted side effects associated with the administration stimulant laxative such as bisacodyl or sodium picosulphate by orally administering sodium chloride to the patient is disclosed. Said side effects include hyponatraemia, hypokalemia, unwanted fluctuations in blood pressure, hypotension and renal failure. In certain embodiments, the sodium chloride is administered in the form of tablets during the two hours period following the administration of the stimulant laxative. This method is particularly useful in preparing patients for a colonoscopy.
