The display device includes a first display substrate, a second display substrate facing the first display substrate; and a sealant disposed between the first display substrate and the second display substrate, in the seal area. The first display substrate has a first base substrate, a first polarizing element including a plurality of first linear patterns extending along a first direction on the first base substrate, and a first protective layer on the first polarizing element and including a first opening. The sealant covers the first opening. Adjacent first linear patterns are separated from each other along a second direction, intersecting the first direction, by a first gap and the first opening exposes at least one first gap in the seal area.
