  • Publication number: 20040257404
Abstract: An ink jet printhead includes a substrate that defines a plurality of ink inlet channels. A plurality of micro-electromechanical nozzle arrangements is positioned on the substrate. Each nozzle arrangement includes a nozzle chamber positioned on the substrate and having a fixed portion that is fast with the substrate and a movable portion that is displaceable with respect to the substrate and that defines an ink ejection port. The nozzle chamber is in fluid communication with a respective ink inlet channel and the movable portion is displaceable towards and away from the substrate respectively to eject ink from the ink ejection port. An actuator is anchored to the substrate and is operatively engaged with the movable portion to displace the movable portion towards the substrate upon receipt of an electrical signal. A restrictive formation is arranged on the substrate and defines an opening that has a cross-sectional area that is less than that of the ink inlet channel.

  • Publication number: 20040257405
Abstract: An ink jet printhead includes a substrate. A plurality of micro-electromechanical nozzle arrangements is positioned on the substrate. Each nozzle arrangement includes a nozzle chamber defining structure positioned on the substrate. The structure has a fixed portion that is fast with the substrate and a movable portion that is displaceable with respect to the substrate and that defines an ink ejection port. The movable portion and fixed portion together define a nozzle chamber and the movable portion is displaceable towards and away from the substrate to reduce and subsequently increase a volume of the nozzle chamber so that ink is ejected from the ink ejection port. An elongate actuator is anchored to the substrate at one end and operatively engaged with the movable portion at an opposite end. The elongate actuator is bent relative to the substrate on receipt of an electrical signal to displace the movable portion with respect to the fixed portion.

  • Publication number: 20040257406
Abstract: A micro-electromechanical fluid ejection mechanism includes a substrate that incorporates drive circuitry. A nozzle chamber structure is arranged on the substrate to define a nozzle chamber and a fluid ejection port in fluid communication with the nozzle chamber. An actuator is fast at one end with the substrate and extends into the nozzle chamber. The actuator includes an actuating member that is connected to the drive circuitry and is anchored at one end to the substrate. The actuating member is displaceable between a quiescent position and an active position to eject fluid from the ejection port. At least a portion of the actuating member is of a shape memory alloy which is configured so that, when the shape memory alloy makes a phase transformation, the actuating member is displaced between the quiescent and active positions.

  • Publication number: 20040257403
Abstract: A micro-electromechanical shutter assembly includes an elongate actuator that is anchored at one end to the wafer substrate to be in electrical contact with the drive circuitry layers. A closure member is mounted on an opposite end of the elongate actuator. The actuator is configured to receive an electrical signal from the drive circuitry layer to displace the closure member between a closed position in which the closure member covers the fluid supply opening and ink is inhibited from flowing through the fluid supply channel and an open position. The elongate actuator is shaped so that, in a rest condition, the actuator encloses an arc. The actuator includes a heating portion that is capable of being heated on receipt of the electrical signal to expand.

  • Patent number: 6832717
Abstract: A method and system for enabling user interaction with computer software running in a computer system. The user interaction is via an interface, such as a sheet of paper bearing information relating to the computer software and coded data indicative of an interactive element relating to the computer software. A sensing device is placed in an operative position relative to the interface surface, and senses indicating data indicative of the interactive element. The sensing device also generates movement data indicative of the sensing device's movement relative to the interface surface. The indicating and movement data from the sensing device are received in a computer, and the interactive element identified. The computer software is then operated at least partly in reliance on the movement data, and in accordance with instructions associated with the interactive element.

  • Patent number: 6832828
Abstract: A micro-electromechanical fluid ejection device includes a substrate. A nozzle chamber wall and a roof wall are positioned on the substrate to define a nozzle chamber and an ink ejection port in the roof wall. An elongate actuator arm has a fixed end portion is fast with the substrate and a free end portion that is spaced from the substrate. The elongate actuator arm incorporates a heating circuit that is connectable to a power supply to heat the actuator arm. The heating circuit is positioned to generate differential thermal expansion and contraction when heated and subsequently cooled to cause reciprocal displacement of the free end portion of the actuator arm. A fluid ejection member is fast with the free end of the elongate actuator arm to be positioned in the nozzle chamber such that said displacement of the free end portion of the actuator arm results in the ejection of fluid from the ink ejection port.

  • Publication number: 20040252165
Abstract: A method of fabricating an inkjet printhead chip includes the step of forming a layer of sacrificial material on a substrate, such that the layer is between three and ten microns thick. A first layer of thermal expansion material is formed on the sacrificial material. A heater circuit is formed on the first layer of thermal expansion material. The sacrificial material and the first layer of thermal expansion material are formed to permit the electrical circuit to make electrical contact with the drive circuitry. A second layer of the thermal expansion material is formed on the heater circuit. A suitable process is applied on the second layer of thermal expansion material to render a surface of the second layer hydrophilic. The sacrificial material is removed.

  • Patent number: 6830318
Abstract: There is disclosed an ink jet printhead which comprises a plurality of nozzles 3 and one or more heater elements 10 in a bubble forming chamber 7 corresponding to each nozzle 3. Each heater element 10 is configured to heat a bubble forming liquid 11 in the printhead to a temperature above its boiling point to form a gas bubble 12 therein. The generation of the bubble 12 causes the ejection of a drop 16 of an ejectable liquid (such as ink) through an ejection aperture 5 in each nozzle 3, to effect printing. The transient rise in pressure within the bubble forming chamber when the bubble forms is less than 20 MPa. Keeping the transient pressures relatively low, the strength requirements of the printhead structures are reduced. Accordingly the dimensions of the components can reduced for more compact design and easier manufacture.
