Patent number: 6798484Abstract: An in-plane switching mode liquid crystal display (IPS-LCD). A plurality of lengthwise-extending common electrodes are formed in each pixel area, and each common electrode has a curved or zigzag profile. A plurality of lengthwise-extending pixel electrodes are formed in each pixel area, and each pixel electrode has a curved or zigzag profile. The pixel electrodes are disposed in the intervals between the common electrodes, and two adjacent pixel and common electrodes form a subpixel area. Liquid crystal molecules are positioned within each sub-pixel area. The two adjacent pixel electrode and common electrodes within each sub-pixel area are not parallel to each other, and thus a gradient in-plane electric field is generated therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2002Date of Patent: September 28, 2004Assignee: Hannstar Display Corp.Inventors: Kie-Hsiung Yang, Sheng-Hsien Lin

Patent number: 6630979Abstract: An electrode array structure in a pixel area of an in-plane switching mode LCD (IPS-LCD). A comb-shaped common electrode has a bar extending transversely and a plurality of teeth extending in a first lengthwise direction from the bar, in which each tooth of the common electrode has a continuous ∠-shaped sidewall. A comb-shaped pixel electrode has a bar extending transversely and a plurality of teeth extending in a second lengthwise direction from the bar, in which each tooth has a continuous ∠-shaped sidewall and parallel is disposed between adjacent teeth of the common electrode. An electric-field gradient is generated between the tooth of the common electrode and the adjacent tooth of the pixel electrode to form a non-uniform electric field.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2002Date of Patent: October 7, 2003Assignee: Hannstar Display Corp.Inventor: Kie-Hsiung Yang

Patent number: 6621546Abstract: An electrode array of IPS-LCD has a comb-shaped common electrode made by patterning a bottom-metal layer, respectively disposed and a comb-shaped pixel electrode made by patterning an inter-metal layer, and a connecting layer made by patterning a top-metal layer. The comb-shaped common electrode has a bar and a plurality of comb-teeth extending in a first Y-direction. The comb-shaped pixel electrode has a bar and a plurality of comb-teeth that extend in a second Y-direction and are inter-digitated with the comb-teeth of the common electrode. The connecting layer is electrically connected to one end of the comb-teeth of the pixel electrode and covers part of the bar of the common electrode. In addition, two strip-shaped metal-shielding layers made by patterning the top-metal layer are disposed over the comb-teeth of the common electrode to eliminate crosstalk.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2001Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Assignee: Hannstar Display Corp.Inventors: Kie-Hsiung Yang, Sheng-Hsien Lin

The pixel electrodes are disposed in the intervals of the common electrodes, and two adjacent pixel electrode and common electrode form a sub-pixel area. Liquid crystal molecules are positioned within each sub-pixel area where is defined as at least two single-domain areas according to the rotating direction of the liquid crystal molecules. Patent number: 4542960Abstract: A four terminal liquid crystal display device includes orthogonally related row and column electrodes separated by a dielectric and disposed in respective sets above and below the liquid crystal medium. The electrodes in proximity to the LC medium are the column electrodes which have a small alternating square wave bias voltage.+-.Vo imposed therebetween so that a voltage of 2Vo magnitude is normally impressed across the LC medium. When an impulse voltage of magnitude 4Vo is impressed across the exterior row electrodes (+2Vo and -2Vo respectively), since the column electrodes are foraminated or have microapertures therethrough, the electric field established between the row and column electrodes in opposite sets, 3Vo, extends through the microapertures into the LC medium to establish a fringe electric field normal to the surfaces of the column electrodes tending to retain the LC directors in the vertical position.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1982Date of Patent: September 24, 1985Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Kie-Hsiung Yang
