Patent number: 8746677Abstract: In one embodiment, a device for moving print media in a printer includes: a rotatable shaft extending lengthwise along an axis of rotation and a hub. The hub is operatively and pivotally connected to the shaft at a connection such that the hub rotates with the shaft about the axis of rotation and so that the hub may tilt on the shaft relative to the axis of rotation. The device also includes a pick tire or other feature on the hub on each side of the connection to move print media when the shaft rotates the hub. In another embodiment, a method for moving print media in a printer includes: applying a force to a sheet of print media at two locations spaced apart across the sheet; and, simultaneously with the act of applying, equalizing the force applied at the two locations.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2010Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Juan D Ramos, Kieran B Kelly, Keith Jariabka

Publication number: 20100253738Abstract: A carriage-actuated venting system for a print head of an inkjet printer includes a print head cap, selectively closable over the print head of the ink jet printer. A vent port is in fluid communication with the print head cap and vents the print head when the print head cap is closed over the print head. A movable shaft is engageable by a movable carriage of the ink jet printer. A vent actuator is coupled to and movable with the shaft to close the vent port and restricts venting of the print head through the print head cap.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 3, 2009Publication date: October 7, 2010Inventors: Keith Jariabka, Scott Martin, Kieran B. Patent number: 6749192Abstract: A media feed mechanism includes a picking device, a first feedroller and a second feedroller. The picking device picks a sheet of media from a media source. The first feedroller moves the sheet of media along a feed media path. During a skew correction phase, the first feedroller rolls in a forward direction feeding the sheet of media forward and the second feedroller turns in a reverse direction preventing the sheet of media from progressing past a nip of the second feedroller. This results in skew correction. After skew correction is performed, the second feedroller turns in the forward direction advancing the sheet of media for printing.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2002Date of Patent: June 15, 2004Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Allan G. Olson, R. Scott Smith, Daniel J. Magnusson, Kieran B Kelly

Patent number: 6464417Abstract: A multi-purpose, transmissive paper sensor includes a light beam projector and light detector having an analog output signal. Changes in the output signal from an open loop condition indicate the presences of at least one print medium being in the field-of-view of the sensor. Output signals indicative of print media leading edge, trailing edge, and number of sheets interrupting the light beam provide improved print media transport control for hard copy apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2001Date of Patent: October 15, 2002Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Co.Inventors: Joseph D. Barbera, Babak Honaryar, William T. Jennings, Pierre J. Kaiser, Kieran B. Kelly
