Publication number: 20240005602Abstract: A processing system divides an image to be rendered into one or more tiles and performs a visibility pass on the primitives of the image. During the visibility pass, the processing system generates visibility data for each primitive of a draw call of the image based on a visible primitive count and a visible draw call count. In response to a primitive of the draw call being visible in the first tile, the processing system increments the visible primitive count and generates visibility data indicating that the primitives of the draw call are to be rendered using draw call index data stored in an on-chip memory. If the primitive is the first visible primitive of the draw call, the processing system further increments the visible draw call count. Additionally, the processing system renders the primitives of the draw call using the draw call index data stored in the on-chip memory.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2022Publication date: January 4, 2024Inventors: Kiia Kallio, Anton Palm

Publication number: 20230410426Abstract: One or more rotated bounding volumes are generated for one or more nodes of a bounding volume hierarchy (BVH). Volume intersection ray tracing tests are then be performed using the rotated bounding volumes with the aim of reducing the number of calculations required relative to an original, non-rotated bounding volume. Rotated bounding volumes are selected from a plurality of candidate rotations, and selection of one of the candidate rotations are based on surface areas, such as minimum total surface areas, of bounding volumes corresponding to each of the candidate rotations. In order to minimize data storage and increase performance, a number of candidate rotations may be limited to a predetermined set of rotations.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 17, 2022Publication date: December 21, 2023Inventors: Miikka Kangasluoma, Kiia Kallio, Daniel James Skinner

Patent number: 11631187Abstract: Systems, apparatuses, and methods for implementing a depth buffer pre-pass are disclosed. A rendering application uses a binning approach to render primitives of a virtual scene on a tile-by-tile basis, with each tile corresponding to a portion of the screen. The application causes a depth buffer pre-pass to be performed for the primitives of the tile before a pixel shader is invoked. During the depth buffer pre-pass, only the depth part of the virtual scene is rendered to determine which pixel samples are visible and which pixel samples are hidden. Then, the scene is redrawn, but the pixel samples that are hidden are not sent to the pixel shader. In cases where a relatively large percentage of primitives overlap, this technique increases the efficiency of the rendering application since pixel shading can be avoided for the pixel samples that are hidden.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2020Date of Patent: April 18, 2023Assignees: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., ATI Technologies ULCInventors: Jan Henrik Achrenius, Mika Tuomi, Kiia Kallio, Pazhani Pillai, Laurent Lefebvre

Patent number: 11335052Abstract: A system, method and a non-transitory computer readable storage medium are provided for hybrid rendering with deferred primitive batch binning. A primitive batch is generated from one or more primitives. A bin is identified for processing the primitive batch. At least a portion of each primitive intersecting the identified bin is processed and a next bin for processing the primitive batch is identified based on an intercept walk order. The processing is iteratively repeated for the one or more primitives in the primitive batch for successive bins until all primitives of the primitive batch are completely processed. Then, the one or more primitives in the primitive batch are further processed.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2018Date of Patent: May 17, 2022Assignees: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., ATI Technologies ULCInventors: Michael Mantor, Laurent Lefebvre, Mark Fowler, Timothy Kelley, Mikko Alho, Mika Tuomi, Kiia Kallio, Patrick Klas Rudolf Buss, Jari Antero Komppa, Kaj Tuomi

Publication number: 20210287418Abstract: A processor dynamically selects a render mode for each render pass of a frame based on the characteristics of the render pass. A software driver of the processor receives graphics operations from an application executing at the processor and converts the graphics operations into a command stream that is provided to the graphics pipeline. As the driver converts the graphics operations into the command stream, the driver analyzes each render pass of the frame to determine characteristics of the render passes, and selects a render mode for each render pass based on the characteristics of the render pass.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2020Publication date: September 16, 2021Inventors: Anirudh R. Patent number: 10957094Abstract: A system, method and a computer program product are provided for hybrid rendering with deferred primitive batch binning A primitive batch is generated from a sequence of primitives. Initial bin intercepts are identified for primitives in the primitive batch. A bin for processing is identified. The bin corresponds to a region of a screen space. Patent number: 10943389Abstract: Techniques for removing or identifying overlapping fragments in a fragment stream after z-culling are disclosed. The techniques include maintaining a first-in-first-out buffer that stores post-z-cull fragments. Each time a new fragment is received at the buffer, the screen position of the fragment is checked against all other fragments in the buffer. If the screen position of the fragment matches the screen position of a fragment in the buffer, then the fragment in the buffer is removed or marked as overlapping. If the screen position of the fragment does not match the screen position of any fragment in the buffer, then no modification is performed to fragments already in the buffer. In either case, he fragment is added to the buffer. The contents of the buffer are transmitted to the pixel shader for pixel shading at a later time.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2016Date of Patent: March 9, 2021Assignees: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., ATI Technologies ULCInventors: Laurent Lefebvre, Michael Mantor, Mark Fowler, Mikko Alho, Mika Tuomi, Kiia Kallio, Patrick Klas Rudolf Buss, Jari Antero Komppa, Kaj Tuomi, Christopher J.
