  • Patent number: 9908142
Abstract: Web lifter and/or stabilizer and method of lifting and/or stabilizing a travelling web and for coating a web. The device creates a web hold down force via a negative pressure slot at its exit side, which draws the web down against the surface on the entry side. The device can be actuated to move the web relative to a slot die coater off the die lips and stop the application of slurry to the web, thereby creating uncoated regions on the web surface. The device can then be actuated to move the web back into contact with the coater to start the application of slurry to the web, thereby creating coated regions on the web surface. Web lifting can be accomplished by rotating the device in first and second directions to lift the web off of the slot die coater and return the web back into contact with the coater.

  • Publication number: 20140255607
Abstract: An improved system for applying a coating to a sheet is disclosed. The system allows precise control of the actuation of the valves and movement of the nozzle to create a plurality of coating profiles. The system includes a controller, which is used to actuate the valves to begin and terminate the flow of material onto the sheet through a nozzle. In addition, the controller may move the nozzle from its operative position to an inoperative position away from the sheet. In some embodiments, a fluid displacement mechanism is used. The controller is also able to coat the opposite side of the sheet. Registration of the coating can be programmed to be in exact alignment, or advanced or delayed by a specific amount.

  • Patent number: 8203020
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of isolating shikimic acid from a plant. First, a plant is provided. Next, the plant is grown in the absence of glyphosate for a first time period. The plant is then treated with glyphosate for a second time period. This second time period is sufficient for the glyphosate to increase the amount of shikimic acid in the plant. The plant with increased amounts of shikimic acid is then harvested and the shikimic acid is isolated from the plant.

  • Patent number: 8079942
Abstract: The archery training device allows an archer to properly train his or her muscles, as well as train for proper archery technique. The archery training device includes a support having a plurality of pairs of apertures formed therethrough. A plurality of elastic members each has opposed first and second ends, which are respectively received within one of the plurality of pairs of apertures and attached to the support. Optionally, the upper end of an elastic band may be releasably attached to the support. A lower end of the optional elastic band is adapted for being held against a support surface by the foot of the archer. In use, the archer grasps the support with the bow hand and grasps a selected number of the plurality of elastic members with the string hand to simulate a string pull of an archery bow.

  • Publication number: 20090042304
Abstract: A method for using stable isotope profiling and optionally trace element profiling to differentiate the origin of commodities, such as pistachios (Pistachia vera), or salmon, is disclosed. Isotope ratios can be determined using any suitable method, such as stable isotope mass spectrometer. Geographic regions were well separated based on isotope ratios. Seasonal effects were found to affect some isotopes for some regions.

  • Patent number: 7130834
Abstract: The detection method includes generating a plurality of neural network models. Each model has as a training set a data set from a plurality of samples of a commodity of known origins. Each sample has been analyzed for a plurality of elemental concentrations. Each neural network model is presented for classification a test data set from a plurality of samples of a commodity of unknown origins. As with the training set, the samples have been analyzed for the same plurality of elemental concentrations. Next a bootstrap aggregating strategy is employed to combine the results of the classifications for each sample in the test data set made by each neural network model. Finally, a determination is made from the bootstrap aggregating strategy as to a final classification of each sample in the test data set. This final classification is indicative of the geographical origin of the commodity.

  • Publication number: 20050222389
Abstract: Methods for producing polypeptide with altered immunogenicity or improved stability properties are disclosed. The methods involve a) expressing a diversified population of nucleotide sequences encoding a polypeptide of interest, b) screening the polypeptides expressed in step a) for function, immunogenicity and/or stability, c) selecting functional polypeptides having altered immunogenicity and/or increased stability, e.g. functional in vivo half-life as compared to the polypeptide of interest, and d) optionally subjecting the nucleotide sequence encoding the polypeptide selected in step c) to one or more repeated cycles of steps a)-c). In a further step the expressed polypeptides of step a) or c) can be conjugated to at least one non-polypeptide moiety.

  • Publication number: 20050201982
Abstract: When interferon gamma (IFNG) is produced in mammalian cell lines a heterogenous population of IFNG polypeptides is obtained due to C-terminal processing of the IFNG polypeptide. Clearly, this constitutes a severe problem in that valuable polypeptide material is lost and, further, it is necessary to carry out time-consuming and cumbersome purification in order to obtain a homogenous population of active IFNG polypeptides having the desired length. It has now been found that an IFNG fragment containing 132 amino acid residues (truncated at the nucleotide level by introducing a stop-codon after the codon encoding amino acid residue no. 132) does not undergo C-terminal truncation or, at least, is not significantly C-terminally truncated. Furthermore, as the IFNG fragment containing 132 amino acid residues is active, this opens up the possibility of producing a homogenous active IFNG polypeptide in eukaryotic host cells, such as CHO cells.

  • Patent number: 6537064
Abstract: A burner having improved flame quality even at high turn-down ratios. The burner includes a flow director which is preferably a bent sheet or plate positioned in the burner to alter the flow geometry of the air component into a series of channels where the air mixes with the fuel. Preferably the flow director is perforated, the perforations providing a second avenue for the flow of air into the mixing channel.
