  • Patent number: 6738618
Abstract: A wireless communication network generally includes a number of subscriber units, a base station controller, and a base station transceiver coupled to the base station controller. A parameter specifying an interval at which subscriber units in the wireless communication network are permitted to generate autonomous messages is stored, for example, in a system parameter database at the base station. The parameter is broadcast by the base station transceiver over-the-air to subscriber units in the wireless communication network. In response to receipt of the parameter, the subscriber units store the parameter and thereafter transmit autonomous message over-the-air only in accordance with the parameter. In one preferred embodiment, the parameter regulates how often autonomous messages can be transmitted by individual subscriber units.

  • Patent number: 6625132
Abstract: A wireless communication system and a mobile station employ at least one threshold to evaluate the quality of transmissions from a serving base station to determine when the mobile station enters a Dead Zone adjacent a border cell of the system. Such thresholds not only consider the ratio of carrier energy (Ec) to interference (Ec/Io) but also consider the energy of the carrier itself. When the relevant measured (or calculated) carrier energy Ec and/or carrier energy to interference ratio Ec/Io are passed, the mobile station performs system reselection, attempting to acquire a different system/carrier. The thresholds employed may be passed from the base station to the mobile station in the System Parameters message, for example.

  • Patent number: 6529491
Abstract: The private/residential wireless communication system uses the code division multiple access air interface to provide communication with radiotelephones. The present invention provides support for both physical and virtual private systems. A radiotelephone monitors the broadcast channel of the public system to obtain private system information. The radiotelephone use the broadcast information together with pre-programmed stored private system information in the radiotelephone memory to acquire and register with the private systems. If the radiotelephone locates a private system that is not stored in its memory, it obtains relevant information for registering with that system. The radiotelephone then stores the information of accepting systems. This information is displayed so that a system can be chosen. The radiotelephone then registers with the chosen system.

  • Patent number: 6195546
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for initiating an over the air parameter administration (OTAPA) of a mobile station without the need for interacting with a mobile station user. A unique service option number included with the initial page indicates to the mobile station that an update is being requested. The mobile station performs a network validation check (SPASM) before permitting the update to take place. Flags are used in the network to alert the system that an attempted update was not completed because a mobile station was not update accessible for any of several reasons. The flags cause the system to update when the mobile station next becomes update accessible.

  • Patent number: 6088578
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and method for increasing the efficiency of usage of an assigned rf spectrum used by a cellular or wireless communication system for a large number of high speed data transfer user requests. An MS, upon analyzing a plurality of parameters available to the MS may determine that although it needs more than a single channel to accommodate a given software data generating application, it may adequately and optimally use less than the maximum number of channels (or maximum data rate) that the MS can support. The MS then generates a request to the base station for additional channels (or a supplemental channel of a higher data rate) to transmit in one data burst a specified total number of quantity of data. The request may also specify the maximum number of channels (or maximum data rate) that the MS can support along with an indication of relative priority by means of indicating the amount of time over which the burst occur as an optimum situation for the MS.
