  • Patent number: 11306221
Abstract: An article includes at least two contiguous layers containing a composition that includes a branched polycarbonate, optionally a linear carbonate-containing polymer, and 0 to less than 5 weight percent filler. The composition is characterized by an average mole percent branching of 0.06 to 2.4 mole percent, which is calculated as 100 times moles of branched carbonate units in the branched polycarbonate divided by the sum of moles of linear carbonate units in the branched polycarbonate and the optional linear carbonate-containing polymer. The composition is further characterized by a melt flow rate of 1 to 20 grams per 10 minutes, determined according to ASTM D1238-13 at 300° C. and 1.2 kilogram load. Also described is a method of additive manufacturing utilizing the composition.

  • Publication number: 20190358900
Abstract: A method is disclosed for making an article with an additive manufacturing machine that includes a build platform (14) and an additive material dispensing nozzle (18) for controlled application of the additive material with respect to a location of the build platform. The method includes attaching a first part (24a) to the build platform. The first part includes a first mating surface that includes a protruding portion (34) and a recessed portion (32). A digital model of a second part that includes a second mating surface comprising recessed and protruding portions (39, 38) complementary to the first mating surface is inputted to the additive manufacturing machine. The nozzle dispenses and hardens an incremental quantity of a polymer material to the first mating surface according to the digital model, and successively-dispensed incremental quantities of polymer material are applied and hardened according to the digital model to produce the article including first and second parts.

  • Publication number: 20180321659
Abstract: The present subject matter includes systems, methods, and devices for optimization of objects generated using 3-D printing. A printed object may be optimized for performance, such as increasing the strength of the object while retaining the shape of the object. For example, if the object is an object designed for a three-point bend, optimization may include removing material from regions within the object to change the relative densities and stiffness in each of the regions while retaining the original shape of the object. Optimization of an object while retaining the object shape enables the object to function and to appear as it was origin ally designed, and to continue to interact with neighboring components in the same way.
