  • Patent number: 7628136
Abstract: A valve control method for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle that uses cylinder deactivation. The method can adjust actuation phases of the engine's valves in an all-cylinder activation mode and a cylinder deactivation mode. The engine's valves may be controlled from an idle operating domain, to a fuel-economy operating domain, and in a cylinder deactivation operating domain.

  • Patent number: 7571635
Abstract: An engine knock detection system for a vehicle engine includes a controller receiving an input indicative of strain applied to an engine component and an output for providing a signal indicative of engine knock. A sensor may be associated with the engine that measures operating parameters of the engine (i.e., strain, for example) to allow the controller to detect and identify engine knock. The sensor may include a Surface-Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensor, such as, for example, a double-SAW sensor that concurrently detects engine torque.

  • Patent number: 7111611
Abstract: A system for controlling a vehicle that includes an engine comprises a controller having an input for receiving an engine torque input command indicative of a desired amount of torque to be generated by the engine, and an output for providing an engine torque output command to the engine. A torque sensor is operatively connected to the engine and the controller. The torque sensor is adapted to measure torque output of the engine and to transmit a signal indicative of the measured torque to the controller. The controller is configured to adjust the engine torque output command provided to the engine using torque feedback control based on the signal received from the torque sensor.

  • Patent number: 6050379
Abstract: In providing automated shifting of a manual transmission, the electro-mechanical clutch actuator of the present invention is provided for disengaging and engaging the clutch of a manual-type transmission. The control algorithm includes utilizing an adaptively learned touchpoint along with a series of calibrated offsets for positioning the clutch during different modes of operation. During engagement of the clutch, a closed-loop, PID, "rate of clutch slip" calculational scheme controls the rate of clutch engagement to a predetermined numeric rate of clutch slip.

  • Patent number: 4961319
Abstract: The present invention is a method for controlling the position of pivotally mounted vanes movable between open and closed operative positions to control gas flow to a turbine. The method includes checking whether the engine throttle is open, checking whether the throttle is wide open if the throttle is open, and determining whether the vehicle is moving if the throttle is not wide open. The method also includes determining whether the engine temperature is above a predetermined temperature if the vehicle is not moving and determining whether the manifold absolute pressure is greater than the barometric pressure if the engine is not above the predetermined temperature. The method further includes determining whether the engine RPM is greater than a predetermined RPM value if the engine temperature is above the predetermined temperature, and opening the vanes to a maximum position if the manifold absolute pressure is not greater than the barometric pressure.

  • Patent number: 4794759
Abstract: This application concerns a turbocharger control system and apparatus in association with a variable exhaust flow type turbocharger in which flow regulating turbine inlet vanes are positioned. The control includes a fluid pressure responsive device for actively positioning the inlet vanes. The device responds to opposing fluid pressure generated forces both of which are regulated in accordance with a program responsive to engine and vehicle parameters. The fluid pressures are the engine's intake manifold vacuum or pressure and the turbocharger's compressor output.
