Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal display panel having a matrix of pixels arranged in rows and columns; a light unit overlapping the liquid crystal display panel to illuminate the liquid crystal display panel, including a light guide plate composed of a plurality of light guide blocks; and a video signal output unit for outputting a first video signal to pixels facing the light guide blocks and a second video signal to pixels facing a gap between adjacent light guide blocks, respectively, wherein the video signal output unit provides the second video signal corrected to correspond to a corrected gradation value.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel having a display area, light sources which illuminate the display area, and a control section having a display panel control circuit which drives the liquid crystal display panel and a backlight control circuit which drives the light sources. The control section is configured to have a partition mode in which the display area is partitioned into a letterbox region and a video display region and to individually control the luminance of a first group of the light sources that mainly illuminate the letterbox region and the luminance of a second group of the light sources that mainly illuminate the video display region, in the partition mode.
