Publication number: 20040161044Abstract: A signal of any physical form corresponding to an information character of an encoding alphabet, is transmitted as an analog waveform defining a symbol, the waveform being cyclical at the symbol rate, to a communication channel and then the signal when received by a receiver is converted to groups of pulses separated by silences, wherein each group of pulses maps to a count corresponding to a character of the encoding alphabet. The groups of pulses are separated by silences of arbitrary duration which are greater than the time between individual pulses. The pulses have a pulse rate greater than the frequency of the symbol. The system permits but does not require communication of relatively narrow bandwidth signals.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2003Publication date: August 19, 2004Applicant: The National University of SingaporeInventors: Jurianto Joe, Kin Mun Lye

Publication number: 20020196168Abstract: According to the invention, oscillating signals are generated from analog signals by providing an analog signal having a variable slope or amplitude to a circuit with a variable operating point and having a transfer function characterized by an unstable operating region bounded by a first and a second stable operating region. The unstable operating region contains a first and a second reference point. The circuit is capable of producing an oscillating signal having a variable duty cycle, the duty cycle increasing as the variable operating point is positioned closer to the first reference point, the duty cycle decreasing as the variable operating point is positioned closer to the second reference point. The variable operating point is positioned substantially within the unstable region to produce the oscillating signal. The positioning of the operating point relative to the first and the second reference points is a function of the variable slope or amplitude of the analog signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 30, 2001Publication date: December 26, 2002Applicant: The National University of SingaporeInventors: Jurianto Joe, Kin Mun Lye

Publication number: 20020131514Abstract: A communication technique includes mapping an information character to two or more subsymbol waveforms to produce an analog waveform. The two or more subsymbol waveforms define the information character. Alternatively, robustness can be achieved wherein each subsymbol waveform represents the information character, so that the information character is redundant in the analog waveform. The likelihood of success in the subsequent decoding of such a waveform to produce the information character is increased due to the redundancy.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 13, 2001Publication date: September 19, 2002Inventors: Jason Wee Peng Ng, Yuen Sam Kwok, Kin Mun Lye, Jurianto Joe
