  • Publication number: 20030012299
Abstract: The present invention presents a method and apparatus for phase hopping and space-time coding signals for transmission on multiple antennas. The method and apparatus provides expansion of a N×N′ space time block code to a M×M′ space time block code, where M>N, by using phase hopping on the symbols within the N×N′ space time block code to allow transmission of the space time block code on a number of diversity antennas greater than N′. A result of M antenna diversity may be achieved for M transmit antennas.

  • Publication number: 20020126648
Abstract: The transmit diversity and symbol rate in a wireless mobile system are increased by allocating the complex symbols to be transmitted in accordance with a time-space slot format that incorporates non-orthogonal-based matrices, defined as matrices whose format is such that the product of the matrix and its Hermitian transpose is other than the identity matrix times a real number other than unity. The non-orthogonal-based matrices are indexed by antenna and by symbol period. Copies and complex conjugates (or negative complex conjugates) of the same symbol that are transmitted from different antennas are mutually separated into non-adjacent parts of the slot. Each non-orthogonal-based “space-time” matrix is composed of orthogonal-based matrices, i.e., matrices other than non-orthogonal-based matrices. Preferably, sequences of complex conjugates are time-reversed in the slot.

  • Patent number: 6185266
Abstract: In a wireless communications system having a transmitter that transmits a transmit diversity signal using multiple antennas, a channel quality metric is computed by measuring a first and second diversity branch signal quality for first and second diversity branches in the receiver. Thereafter, the channel quality metric is computed in response to a difference between the first and second diversity branch signal qualities. The first and second diversity branch signal quality measurements may be signal-to-noise measurements. In one embodiment, the channel quality metric is computed by taking a square root of a product of signal-to-noise ratios of the first and second diversity branches in the receiver.
