  • Patent number: 6921804
Abstract: A disengagement vessel employing a lock hopper effectively reduces concentration of non-polymer-associated components in the polymer product slurry of a first olefin slurry polymerization reactor, allowing cascading of a second slurry polymerization reactor operating at lesser concentration of comonomers, hydrogen, and other components to produce multicompositional polyolefin polymers and/or polymers having a multimodal monomer distribution, e.g. diblock polymers having substantially non-overlapping comonomer contents between the blocks.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 25, 2003
Date of Patent: July 26, 2005
    Assignee: Equistar Chemicals L.P.
Inventors: Joel A. Mutchler, Kiran M. Gupte, Michael H. Treptau

  • Publication number: 20040077807
Abstract: Olefin polymerization in the presence of heterogeneous supported catalysts is improved by incorporating into the supported catalyst a unifunctional hydrophobic tether comprising a hydrophobic portion containing no basic nitrogen and a univalent reactive group. The unifunctional hydrophobic tether reduces fouling and sheeting in gas phase polymerization processes and improves polymer morphology and bulk density in slurry polymerization processes, while substantially maintaining or enhancing catalyst polymerization activity.

  • Patent number: 6713585
Abstract: The present invention provides an ethylene copolymer resin that has unique melt elastic properties not observed in ethylene copolymers heretofore known. Specifically, the ethylene copolymer resin of the present invention when in pelletized form has a reduction in melt elasticity (ER) of 10% or more to a final value of 1.0 or less upon rheometric low shear modification or solution dissolution. Moreover, the resin of the present invention when in reactor-made form exhibits at least a partially reversible increase of 10% or more in ER when pelletizing the same. An ethylene polymerization catalyst, a process of preparing the ethylene copolymer resin and a high-impact film are also provided herein.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 6630548
Abstract: A gas-phase process for polymerizing an olefin is disclosed. The process involves feeding the catalyst into the reactor in a stream of gas that comprises at least 75 volume % of a noble gas in order to reduce static.

  • Patent number: 5859157
Abstract: A process for the gas phase polymerization of olefins. In this process a transition metal-containing solid catalyst component is introduced into a cylindrical section of a vertically disposed reactor in a first stream. A second stream, comprising an organometallic cocatalyst component is simultaneously separately introduced into the said cylindrical section of a vertically disposed reactor at a distance from the point of introduction of the first stream of no more than about 20% of the inside diameter of the tubular reactor.
