Patent number: 9936458Abstract: Techniques for managing battery power of a mobile device are described. In an aspect, battery power may be reserved for an application prior to execution of the application on the mobile device. The reservation may ensure that the application has sufficient battery power for execution. In another aspect, battery power may be allocated to applications based on their priorities. The applications may be ordered based on their priorities, and the available battery power for the mobile device may be allocated to one application at a time, starting with the highest priority application. In yet another aspect, battery power may be allocated to applications based on a battery discharge curve for the mobile device. An operating point on the battery discharge curve may be selected based on at least one objective. The available battery power may be determined based on the selected operating point and allocated to the applications.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2014Date of Patent: April 3, 2018Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Liren Chen, Kirk Steven Taylor, Jack Brian Steenstra

Patent number: 9507420Abstract: Methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for providing haptic feedback to assist in capturing images are presented. In some embodiments, a method for providing haptic feedback to assist in capturing images includes obtaining, via an image capture device, an ambient light measurement of an environment in which the image capture device is present. The method further includes detecting, via the image capture device, one or more objects within one or more image frames captured by the image capture device. The method also includes changing, via the image capture device, a manner in which haptic feedback is provided to a user of the image capture device, based at least in part on the obtained ambient light measurement and the detected one or more objects.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2014Date of Patent: November 29, 2016Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Robert Scott Tartz, Kirk Steven Taylor, Mark Stirling Caskey, Suzana Arellano, Charles Alfred Bergan

Patent number: 9385560Abstract: Methods, systems and devices for an energy harvesting sensor are disclosed. A sensor device may include an energy harvesting element configured to harvest energy from a source of energy that is to be measured by the sensor device, and an energy storage element configured to store energy generated by the energy harvesting element. The sensor device may further include a transmitter circuit coupled to the energy storage element and configured to transmit a wireless signal when the energy stored in the energy storage element is sufficient to power a transmission of the wireless signal. The time between transmissions by the transmitter may be used by a receiver of those transmissions to calculate a measure of the quantity being used for energy harvesting.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2013Date of Patent: July 5, 2016Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Kirk Steven Taylor, Kenneth Kaskoun

Publication number: 20110235592Abstract: Techniques for allowing network terminals to lease resources from one another. In an exemplary embodiment, an owner terminal determines the availability of resources (locally available or remotely accessible) to share with other terminals. The owner terminal establishes service and price level terms for sharing its resource, and advertises those terms to other terminals. A user terminal determines its own resource requirements, and searches a network for one or more owner terminals offering the desired resource. An owner terminal and a user terminal negotiate on the terms for use of an identified resource, and the owner terminal leases the resource to the user terminal. Applications include a virtual data center for leasing file storage space, network traffic bandwidth leasing to devices such as mobile phones, ad hoc distributed computing architectures, and third-party operating system (OS) support schemes.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 26, 2010Publication date: September 29, 2011Applicant: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Guilherme Luiz Karnas Hoefel, Kirk Steven Taylor, Liren Chen
