If the content item is in an inactive current context, the content item need not be updated. Content items may be updated in various manners, including generating a preview of the content item. A preview of a content item may be generated by retrieving the content item via an interface, where the interface is determined from data associated with the content item. Upon retrieval of a content item via the interface, a preview of the content item can be generated, such as by generating an image file having associated metadata.

The techniques further include determining to send, to the gateway provider through the communications network, a first message that indicates the operator data and the user data for obtaining a service with an operator-specific interface. In some embodiments, the first message is sent after a random delay to decentralize traffic at the gateway. In some embodiments, the first message is sent when a predetermined fraction of battery life at the user equipment is sufficient to send the first message.
