  • Publication number: 20050077075
Abstract: A flexible stator bar generally includes a stranded conductor having a rectangular shaped cross sectional profile, wherein the stranded conductor comprises a plurality of wires having a gauge dimension effective to impart flexibility; and a thermoplastic elastomeric insulating material disposed about the stranded conductor. Also disclosed herein are processes for fabricating the flexible stator bar, which generally comprises depositing a thermoplastic elastomeric insulating material onto the flexible stranded conductor, which can be flexibly oriented into a desired position, thereby improving dimensional control relative to Roebel-type stator bars. The insulated flexible stranded conductor may then be coated with a B-stage epoxy or the like and cured to form the final shape after assembly within the desired electrical machine application.

  • Publication number: 20050073284
Abstract: A power generation plant comprising a power generating unit that includes at least one first generator, such as an induction generator, coupled to at least one synchronous generator having a rotor with a superconducting (SC) coil. The induction generator and the SC synchronous generator are coupled so that the SC synchronous generator supplies the induction generator with reactive power. Sufficient reactive power is preferably generated by the SC synchronous generator to meet the demand of the induction generator for VARs, as well as permit the induction generator to have a relatively large airgap.

  • Publication number: 20040239201
Abstract: Methods and systems for generating electricity using a stationary superconducting field coil and a stator winding are provided. The method includes creating a magnetic field with the field coil, and rotating a homopolar rotor within the magnetic field such that a rotating magnetic field is created in the stationary stator winding by an interaction of a rotating permeance wave produced by the rotating rotor and the magnetic field produced by the stationary field coil. The apparatus includes a stator core that includes a plurality of axial grooves, and a plurality of stator windings positioned within the grooves, a rotor including at least one set of salient pole pieces coupled to a shaft, each of the set of pole pieces for generating a rotating magnetic field, and a superconducting field coil circumscribing the shaft for generating a magnetic field in each set of pole pieces.
