  • Patent number: 4404795
Abstract: This invention provides improvements in method of and apparatus for reducing an emitted amount of particulates by collecting the particulates contained in the exhaust gas from a diesel engine by a trapper. According to the invention, firstly, an excess amount of the particulates which have adhered to the trapper is detected, and thereafter, temperature of the trapper being within a range of self-burning temperature of the particulates is detected. When necessity for regenerating the trapper is ascertained based on the both detections described above, the inlet side of the trapper is heated to a range of igniting temperature of the particulates, whereby a large igniting energy required for propagating combustion is accumulated. Thereafter, secondary air is supplied to the trapper to ignite the particulates, and combustion is propagated to the particulates being within the range of self-burning temperature thereof by the secondary air continuously supplied, to thereby regenerate the trapper.

  • Patent number: 4242997
Abstract: In an exhaust gas recirculation system for an internal combustion engine, a flow control valve is disposed within a recirculation pipe and operatively connected to a pneumatically operated servomotor to control the flow quantity of exhaust gases through the recirculation pipe, and an orifice is disposed within the recirculation pipe upstream of the valve to form a space between the valve and the orifice. A pressure regulator serves to modulate negative pressure from an engine intake manifold to the servomotor on a basis of pneumatic pressure applied thereto and pressure in the space. The pneumatic pressure applied to the pressure regulator is electrically controlled to satisfy the following equation.Pd=f(Pv, N)where the character Pd is the pneumatic pressure applied to the pressure regulator, and the characters Pv and N respectively indicate the negative pressure in the intake manifold and the engine speed.

  • Patent number: 4110979
Abstract: An apparatus for introducing secondary air into an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, provided with a three-way catalytic converter in the exhaust system. The apparatus includes a first air flow control valve adapted for controlling the amount of air introduced into the exhaust system in accordance with the atmosphere of the exhaust gas so as to cause it to be kept near stoichiometric atmosphere, and a second air flow control valve adapted for preliminarily controlling the amount of secondary air introduced into said first air flow control valve in accordance with the amount of engine fluid passing through the intake system or exhaust system. The atmosphere control operation by the first air flow control valve is effectively promoted by the second air flow control valve, so that atmosphere of the exhaust gas can be strictly and precisely controlled to said stoichiometric atmosphere for proper operation of the three-way catalytic converter.
