  • Patent number: 4289220
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a hydraulic transmission such as a fluid torque converter equipped with a lock-up clutch, including a housing having a front wall portion with a disk-shaped end wall portion and a rear portion formed as an impeller, a turbine provided between the front wall portion and the impeller, and a disk provided between the end wall portion and the turbine. The disk is adapted to cooperate with the end wall portion thereby providing the lock-up clutch, wherein a buffering means which effects a buffering driving connection between outer peripheral portions of the disk and the turbine is provided in an annular space left between the front wall portion of the housing and the outer peripheral portion of the turbine.

  • Patent number: 4207757
Abstract: In a double Cardan universal joint, a pair of cross joint assemblies each include a yoke and a trunnion of a cross, and a motion transmitting ring interconnects the two trunnions of a cross. There is provided a centering assembly including a socket member extending from one of the yokes and formed with a socket opening and a lubricant reservoir, a cylindrical stem extending from the other of the yokes into the socket opening, an annular insert mounted in the socket opening, a ball member oscillatorily retained in the annular insert and formed with an aperture for receiving the cylindrical stem for rotation about its own axis and axial sliding movement, a first seal means disposed between the outer peripheral surface of the ball member and the annular insert, and a second seal means disposed between the aperture in the ball member and the cylindrical stem.

  • Patent number: 4063468
Abstract: A change-speed gear system for use in an automatic transmission, which includes a center output shaft, hollow input and intermediate shafts coaxially disposed around the center output shaft, first and second planetary gear mechanisms, first and second selectively actuatable clutches, and first and second selectively actuatable brakes.Sun gears of the two planetary gear mechanisms are secured to the intermediate shaft while the planetary carrier and the ring gear respectively of the first and second planetary gear mechanisms are secured to the output shaft.Driving portions of the two clutches are coupled to the input shaft while drivable portions of the first and second clutches are respectively coupled to the ring gear of the first planetary gear mechanism and to the intermediate shaft. Movable portions of the first and second brakes are respectively coupled to the intermediate shaft and to the planetary carrier of the second planetary gear mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4036082
Abstract: An overdrive device is provided for use in an automatic transmission of the type including a torque converter and a change gear mechanism. The torque converter has a pump impeller obtaining its input from an engine and a turbine runner whose output is applied to a shaft of the change gear mechanism. The overdrive device is disposed between the torque converter and the change gear mechanism and is responsive to the operation of the change gear mechanism. The device includes a planetary gear train, an overdrive brake, and a one-way clutch.During overdrive, when the speed of the shaft of the change gear mechanism exceeds that of the turbine runner, the overdrive brake is actuated to connect the shaft of the change gear mechanism through the planetary gear train to the pump impeller of the torque converter. The device bypasses the turbine runner of the torque converter by a one-way clutch decoupling the shaft of the change gear mechanism.
