    Abstract: Isobutylene polymers are prepared by polymerizing the monomers at from 0.2 to 20 bar and from -130.degree. and +60.degree. C. in the presence of from 0.01 to 20 mmol of a boron halide catalyst system which contains as cocatalyst a carboxylic anhydride or carbonyl halide, preferably an aliphatic or aromatic, unsubstituted or halogen-substituted C.sub.4 -C.sub.18 -carboxylic anhydride of C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 -carbonyl halide and where appropriate also a customary polymerization accelerant in customary amounts, in the presence or absence of an inert solvent with dissipation of the heat of reaction.

    Abstract: Solid organic polymers are chlorinated with chlorine to give chlorinated polymers in the presence of a solvent which contains from 20 to 100% by weight of phosgene and in which the polymer is dissolved or suspended, at or below the boiling point of the mixture of chlorine and solvent, by initiating the reaction with actinic light or another initiator which produces free radicals. A mixture of not less than 50% by weight of phosgene and a chlorofluorocarbon or chlorofluorohydrocarbon, such as chlorotrifluoromethane, can also be used as the solvent, but phosgene is most suitable.

    Abstract: Isobutylene polymers are prepared continuously, in aliphatic C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -hydrocarbons in the presence of soluble cationic polymerization initiators and coinitiators at from -40.degree. to 40.degree. C. and under from 0.01 to 10 bar, and the solvents and monomers vaporized during the polymerization are recycled, by a process in which the liquid stream of the monomer solution, containing 40-95, in particular 50-85, percent by weight of the monomers, the liquid streams of the recycle and of the coinitiator solution and the separate stream of the initiator solution are combined in a first zone containing the polymerization zone, and the resulting polymer solution is taken off continuously through a second zone vertically below the first zone. The liquid streams of the monomer solution, the coinitiator solution and the recycle can furthermore be fed into the first zone separately from one another.

C. below the temperature at which the particles of the material being ground begin to agglomerate, and (2) an aluminum-containing component, in which process the titanium-containing component (1) of the catalyst system used is one which has been treated, after milling and before polymerization, with (i) titanium tetrachloride and (ii) an ether and/or an ester.

    Abstract: In the hydrogenation of polymers or copolymers synthesized from dienes, or containing diene hydrocarbons, which is as a rule carried out in an organic solvent using hydrogen in the presence of conventional complex hydrogenation catalysts based on metals of sub-group 8 of the periodic table of the elements and aluminum trialkyls it is important to have from 0.5 to 50 moles of water present in the hydrogenation zone per mole of the heavy metal component of the catalyst. The hydrogenation time can be substantially reduced by this measure.

    Abstract: A process for the manufacture of homopolymers and copolymers of .alpha.-monoolefins by polymerizing the monomer or monomers by means of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst comprising (I) a titanium trichloride component and (II) an aluminum-alkyl component, wherein the titanium trichloride component (I) employed is obtained by (1) in a first stage moistening a suitable conventional catalyst component, consisting entirely or substantially of titanium trichloride, with a hydrocarbon mixture comprising a liquid alkane hydrocarbon and a liquid benzene hydrocarbon and (2) in a second stage drying the catalyst component, moistened with the hydrocarbon mixture, under an inert gas, with constant mechanical mixing, within a certain period, at a temperature which is from 5.degree. to 50.degree. C. above the boiling point of the highest-boiling hydrocarbon present in the hydrocarbon mixture which has been used to moisten the component.

The characteristic feature is that the catalyst system used is one in which the component (1.1) has been ground with component (1.2) without the use of auxiliaries or additives in a vibratory ball mill using specific steel balls and a specific grinding acceleration over a specific period of time at a temperature which is just below that at which the particles in the ground material begin to agglomerate.
