Abstract: Disclosed herein is an aqueous coating composition including an anionically stabilized binder,a color pigment, a polycarboxylic acid, and optionally a solvent. Further disclosed is a method for producing an inventive aqueous coating composition by adding a solution of polycarboxylic acid in a solvent to a coating composition including an anionically stabilized binder and color pigment.Additionally disclosed is a method for producing a multicoat paint system by producing a basecoat layer or at least two directly consecutive basecoat layers directly on a substrate optionally coated with a first coating layer, producing a clearcoat layer directly on the basecoat layer or the topmost basecoat layer, and jointly curing the basecoat layer(s) and the clearcoat layer. At least one of the basecoat materials includes the aqueous coating composition disclosed herein and/or an aqueous coating prepared by the disclosed method. A multicoat paint system obtainable by the method is additionally disclosed.

Abstract: Described herein are an aqueous coating composition including at least one anionically stabilized binder, effect pigment, polycarboxylic acid, and solvent, and a method for producing a multicoat paint system by producing a basecoat directly on a substrate, producing a clearcoat directly on the basecoat, and then jointly curing the basecoat and the clearcoat. At least one of the basecoat materials includes the aqueous coating. Also described herein are multicoat paint system obtainable by this method, and the use of at least one polycarboxylic acid in an aqueous coating composition for improving the effect pigment orientation, or for color matching.

Abstract: The invention relates to basecoats for the production of paint systems of the basecoat-clearcoat type, which comprise a water-thinnable polyacrylate resin obtainable by polymerizing in a first stage in an organic solvent ethylenically unsaturated monomers free from carboxyl groups and, after at least 80% by weight of these monomers have reacted, polymerizing in a second stage monomers containing carboxyl groups and neutralizing the polyacrylate resin obtained in this way.

Abstract: The invention relates to basecoats for the production of finishes of the basecoat/clearcoat type which comprise a water-thinnable polyacrylate resin which can be obtained by polymerizing, either successively or in part amounts, monomers containing carboxyl groups and monomers free from carboxyl groups in an organic solvent to form a polyacrylate resin which is neutralized, at least partially, and dispersed in water.
