  • Patent number: 5383594
Abstract: A radiation-shielding storage/transport container has a cast-iron vessel having an open end defining an end face, a steel ring engaging the end face and forming at least one annular seat, a weld unitarily bonding the ring to the end face, and a cover secured to the steel ring in the seat thereof. The cast-iron vessel is formed at its open end with an annular seat having a shoulder surface forming the end face. The weld is an aluminothermic weld that extends over the entire surface of the interface between the ring and the vessel. The ring is formed with two such seats and the cover includes an inner plug cover and an outer cover each in a respective one of the seats. The outer cover is of steel and a second peripheral weld connects the outer cover to the respective seat.

  • Patent number: 4909141
Abstract: A device for pressing cylindrical containers holding nuclear facility waste materials into disk pellets includes an initial press and a main press. In the initial press, the container is deformed by an arrangement of movable dies and tension-relieving rams into a shape suitable to fit into a compaction chamber in the main press. After the container is collapsed by the dies and rams of the initial press, the initial press is opened and the collapsed container is deposited into the compaction chamber of the main press where it is compacted into a disk-like pellets and discharged from the compaction chamber.

  • Patent number: 4508969
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for holding, transporting and final storing burned-out reactor fuel elements comprising a hollow-cylindrical container that can be closed with a cover. On its sealing surface which is opposite the cover, the container is provided with projections which are of dovetail profile. The cover is cast onto the container around the dovetail projections by means of a casting mold whereby an intimate and firm connection between the container jacket and the cover can be produced. The cover can also be prefabricated with filler channels for directing metal casting material into recesses provided in the sealing surface of the cover. When the metal hardens in the recesses the cover is securely locked to the container. The container may have a shielding cover beneath the top cover.

  • Patent number: 4498011
Abstract: The invention concerns a device for the receiving, moving and radiation-shielding of vessels filled with expended reactor fuel elements. The device consists of a protective container having a base, a cylindrical protective jacket and a cover made from concrete. At the lower rim of the jacket there are lateral air ducts which open into the annular space between protective jacket and fuel element vessel. In the area of the upper jacket edge, lateral air outlet ducts are provided. For facilitating the loading of the device with fuel element containers and its transportation, the base is constructed in the form of a separate movable pallet. The fuel element container can be placed on this pallet, and the protective jacket over it. The air outlet ducts in the area of the cover are arranged in an inclined or angular fashion. The base is provided with a raised center platform for supporting the fuel element vessel.
