  • Patent number: 11162453
Abstract: A piston for use in an internal combustion engine having a two-piece construction including an upper and a lower part. The upper and the lower parts include one or more overlapping cutouts to reduce the weight of the piston. One or more of the cutouts or connecting walls include wall regions that transition to adjacent walls without sharp or abrupt areas. The piston upper and lower parts are permanently joined together. One or more tongue and groove structures are used to provide a locking connection between the piston upper and lower parts.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 3, 2017
Date of Patent: November 2, 2021
    Assignee: KS Kolbenschmidt GmbH
    Inventors: Klaus Lormes, Willi Sikorsky
  • Patent number: 10823109
Abstract: A piston for use in an internal combustion engine having a pressure side and counterpressure side. The piston includes a piston skirt having skirt wall sections and box walls connecting the skirt wall sections. A spacing between the box walls on the pressure side is 35%-51% of the piston diameter and on the counterpressure side is 26%-39% of the piston diameter. Reduced angles of the extraction angle slopes on the pressure and counterpressure sides as well as larger free spaces are achieved which provides for lower piston mass and greater distribution of stresses in the box region of the piston.

  • Publication number: 20190136793
Abstract: An internal combustion engine piston having a cooling chamber open to in a direction toward of pin boss bores. The cooling chamber having at least one oil guiding surface having a slope. On directing a cooling oil spray stream onto the at least one sloped oil guiding surface, there is increased heat transfer from the piston to the cooling oil. In one example, the oil guiding surface slope has a concave or convex curvature.

  • Publication number: 20180283313
Abstract: A piston for an internal combustion engine including a piston head having supporting skirt wall sections which are arranged on the bottom side of the piston head. Connecting walls extending from a pin boss are connected to the skirt wall sections in a central zone of the skirt wall which is in the form of a segment of a circle.

  • Publication number: 20180274480
Abstract: An internal combustion engine piston formed by a lower part connected to an upper part through a form-fitting connection. In one example, the piston lower part has a flat joining area with at least one recess and the piston upper part has a flat joining area including an annular recess. The upper part annual recess extends from the joining area into the lower part, wherein the at least one recess of the lower part is in overlap with a partial area of the annular recess in the upper part after the form-fitting connection. In one example, a sealing element is used between the upper part and the lower part.

  • Publication number: 20170051703
Abstract: An internal combustion engine piston having a cooling chamber open to in a direction toward of pin boss bores. In one example, a shaft separates an inner form of a cooling chamber and a cooling pocket. A transfer hole allows passage of a cooling oil between the inner form and the cooling pocket or several cooling pockets. In one example when the piston is at a bottom dead center position, a cooling oil nozzle is directed toward the transfer hole and when the piston is at a top dead center position, the cooling oil nozzle is directed to a hub region of the cooling chamber.
