    Abstract: A process for the impregnation of active carbon with an iodine compound in which the solution is also provided with a reducing agent preferably hydrazine or a compound capable of decomposing to produce sulfur dioxide (e.g. a sulfite or hydrogen sulfite) or solubilized sulfur dioxide. The impregnated active carbon can be used for the removal of sulfur dioxide or hydrogen sulfide from a gas stream.
