  • Patent number: 11859026
Abstract: A method of making a pyranine monomer composition comprises the step of reacting pyranine with a functionalizing agent that functionalizes the pyranine molecule with a polymerizable functional group to provide a composition of functionalized pyranine monomers, said functionalization reaction taking place in an aqueous reaction medium, and in the presence of a molar excess of said functionalizing agent, such that the functionalization reaction product is a monomer composition substantially free of unfunctionalized pyranine compound. The pyranine monomer compositions made by the method can be used to make fluorescent tagged water soluble polymer compositions that advantageously are substantially free of unpolymerized pyranine. The fluorescent tagged water soluble polymer compositions can be used in a method of inhibiting scale in industrial water systems.

  • Patent number: 11542187
Abstract: A fluorescent water treatment polymer comprises at least one water soluble carboxylic acid monomer other than maleic acid, at least one sulfonated pyrene-containing fluorescent monomer, and at least one phosphino group wherein the phosphorous atom of the phosphino group is in the polymer backbone. Additional monomers can be present, with the proviso that if maleic acid is present it comprises no greater than 75 mol % of the polymer. Surprisingly, it has been found that when the phosphino group is present the polymers exhibit an unexpectedly strong fluorescent signal strength. The signal strength of the fluorescent monomer in the polymer is further enhanced when the polymer comprises no greater than 75 mol % maleic acid.

  • Publication number: 20180169445
Abstract: A dried rheology modifier composition comprises a swellable emulsion polymer and a water soluble support polymer. In one embodiment the swellable emulsion polymer is polymerized in the presence of the water soluble support polymer. In one embodiment the swellable emulsion polymer is blended with the water soluble support polymer. The drying can be accomplished by spray drying, resulting in a non-tacky powder having good shelf life. The dried rheology modifiers can be subjected to a further heat treatment which can result in a rheology modifier that imparts a short flow characteristic to product formulations. The swellable emulsion polymer can be alkali swellable or acid swellable. The water soluble support polymer can be a polysaccharide or a derivative thereof, or a polyvinyl acetate or derivative thereof.
