  • Patent number: 5999156
Abstract: A matrix electrode structural display element driving unit is provided with a display panel in which electrodes are arranged in a matrix pattern, and a signal electrode driving circuit and a scanning electrode driving circuit for driving the display panel. A latch pulse signal LPX to be inputted to the signal electrode driving circuit and a latch pulse signal LPY to be inputted to the scanning electrode driving circuit are used as signals with different waveforms. Since a conventional general driving IC is used, a unit, where a level of an applied voltage to a display element is changed twice during one selecting period, can be obtained at a low price.

  • Patent number: 5920367
Abstract: In a liquid crystal display device of the present invention, a white plate light source such as a cool cathode fluorescent tube is provided on a back surface of a liquid crystal cell, i.e., on a surface opposite to a displaying surface of the liquid crystal cell. On a surface opposite to the displaying surface of the liquid crystal panel, a polarizing plate-equipped semitransmitting reflecting plate is provided. The liquid crystal panel is composed of active elements such as MIM (Metal-Insulator-Metal) elements or TFTs (Thin Film Transistors). With this arrangement, discharge of a charge is suppressed by switching of the active element when a voltage is applied to two types of electrodes sandwitching a liquid crystal layer.

  • Patent number: 5864328
Abstract: A driving method for LCD apparatuses allows the dividing-driving method, which is effectual against the residual image phenomenon, or the burning phenomenon, to be applicable to drivers which are provided in the conventional LCD apparatuses of the passive type and are driven by the voltage averaging method. By the method, among voltages inputted to the scanning electrode driving circuit, levels of voltages which are inputted also to the data electrode driving circuit are switched to different levels at fixed timings, while levels of voltages inputted only to the data electrode driving circuit are switched to different levels at fixed timings. With this, waveforms of the signals outputted by the respective driving circuits are adjusted, thereby resulting in that a waveform of a difference signal of the scanning signal and the data signal is adjusted.

  • Patent number: 5760758
Abstract: A method of driving a display device having a plurality of signal electrode lines, a plurality of scanning electrode lines, and a display element and a 2-terminal type non-linear element connected to each other in series between each signal electrode line and each scanning electrode line, in which a selected period is divided into a writing period for charging the display element with more than a certain amount of charge through the 2-terminal type non-linear element and an erasing period following the writing period, and a second voltage which has a polarity reverse to that of the first voltage and does not erase the charge charged in the writing period is applied in the erasing period to turn on the display element. The after-images can be reduced significantly, and the tolerance of the second voltage required to obtain high-contrast can be broadened.
