  • Patent number: 11136734
Abstract: A sound barrier system for use in mitigating noise having an origami sheet or origami-inspired mechanism that can use folding to change configuration and lattice topology; and a plurality of cylindrical inclusions disposed on top of the origami sheet. The plurality of cylindrical inclusions being periodically arranged such that folding kinematics of the origami sheet induces reconfiguration of the periodicity of the plurality of cylindrical inclusions and associated wave blocking of the noise.

  • Patent number: 6598717
Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for surface damping augmentation. The apparatus of the present invention includes a viscoelastic material, a hybrid constraining layer mechanically connected to the viscoelastic material and having an active material and a passive material, and the active material mechanically connected to the passive material. The method provides for selecting an active constraining material, selecting a passive constraining material, forming a hybrid constraining layer from the active constraining material and the passive constraining material, and mechanically connecting the hybrid constraining layer to a viscoelastic material.

  • Patent number: 5838092
Abstract: An active constrained layer system includes a passive viscoelastic damping material positioned on top of a substrate. An active piezoelectric layer is positioned on top of the passive viscoelastic damping material. An edge element physically connects the active piezoelectric layer to the substrate to transmit active forces and moments from the piezoelectric layer to the substrate. The novel edge element yields higher active control from the piezoelectric layer, while preserving the damping capacity of the passive viscoelastic layer. The edge element may be implemented in a variety of ways, including an edge element clamp structure and an edge element post structure.

  • Patent number: 5046383
Abstract: An event-sequenced control for power-on clutch-to-clutch upshifting of a multiple speed ratio automatic transmission. The average output shaft acceleration during the fill period of the on-coming clutch is determined and used to compute a target acceleration value for the completion of the torque phase. The initial achievement of on-coming clutch torque capacity is detected when the input acceleration momentarily becomes negative or when the output acceleration drops by a first specified percentage of the difference between the initial and target values, whichever comes first. As such point, the reduction of the off-going clutch pressure is intensified but its slippage is limited to a near-zero value. An impending completion of the torque phase is detected when the output acceleration drops by a second specified percentage of the difference between the initial and target values.
