    Abstract: This invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of Omeprazole of the formula-I starting from 4-nitro-2,3,5-trimethylpyridine-N-oxide and through novel intermediates 2-hydroxymethyl-3,5-dimethyl-4-nitro pyridine of the formula II and novel 2-chloromethyl-3,5-dimethyl-4-nitro pyridine of the formula III.
