  • Publication number: 20060253782
Abstract: Techniques are described for managing various types of content and devices, such as via a GUI of a Content Management (“CM”) system executing on a computing device. In some situations, some of the content being managed includes television-related programming content, with the CM system receiving EPG metadata information for the content, and other types of content (e.g., one or more channels of scheduled digital music and/or on-demand digital music, photos and other images, etc.) may similarly be managed in some situations. In some situations, the managing of the content includes manipulating and presenting groups of one or more pieces (or “items”) of content via the GUI, such as by creating and managing playlists of pieces of television-related and other multimedia content. Such playlists may in some situations include a mixture of multiple distinct types of content, and may be used in various ways for content presentation and device control.

  • Publication number: 20060253874
Abstract: Techniques are described for managing various types of content and devices, such as via a user interface of a Content Management (“CM”) system executing on a computing device. In some situations, the content being managed includes television-related programming content and/or other types of content (e.g., one or more channels of scheduled digital music and/or on-demand digital music, photos and other images, etc.). In some situations, the content managing is performed via a mobile device (e.g., a smartphone or other cellular telephone, PDA or other electronic organizer, etc.) via a CM system user interface displayed on the mobile device, such as to allow a user of the mobile device to access some or all of the functionality of the CM system that would otherwise be available via a CM system GUI displayed on a general-purpose personal computer, as well as to synchronize with such a GUI in various ways.

In some situations, the managing of the content includes identifying groups of devices via the GUI to present or otherwise interact with various types of content, and to controlling one or more of the devices in various ways. The groups of devices may be of various types, such as content presentation devices of a particular type, content presentation devices that are currently located in a particular location, or content presentation devices or other devices that otherwise share one or more indicated attributes of interest.

  • Publication number: 20060085835
Abstract: A content management (CM) system is provided to centrally control operation of one or more connected devices by issuing control requests and/or data requests. In some situations the connected device(s) include devices that control presentation of television programming-related content, such as digital video recorder (“DVR”) devices and media center devices, and in other situations may include other types of media devices and/or other electromechanical (“E/M”) devices that may be centrally controlled, such as E/M devices for home automation that may operate independently or in conjunction with the media devices. In some situations, the CM system communicates with the connected devices via a network and using appropriate protocol(s), and may be accessed remotely via a network so as to allow a user to remotely operate the CM system. The CM system may further control searching, identification, selection, and presentation of pieces of media content by the connected device(s).

  • Publication number: 20060075429
Abstract: Techniques are described for managing various types of content in various ways, such as based on voice commands or other voice-based control instructions provided by a user. In some situations, at least some of the content being managed includes television programming-related content, which may be managed via the voice controls in a variety of ways, such as to allow a user to locate and identify content of potential interest, to schedule recordings of selected content, to manage previously recorded content (e.g., to play or delete the content), to control live television, etc. This abstract is provided to comply with rules requiring an abstract, and it is submitted with the intention that it will not be used to interpret or limit the scope or meaning of the claims.

  • Publication number: 20060041927
Abstract: A graphical user interface (“GUI”) for a content management system is provided, such as to present television program information and/or information associated with other forms of multimedia content. In some situations, the GUI displays various types of information about multiple pieces of content that are currently appropriate for display, and one or more users may make various types of selections that affect the information being displayed. In addition, in some situations various techniques are employed to maintain a state of the GUI that is focused on one or more current selections as changes occur, such as to coordinate information display between multiple distinct information panes or other view areas of the GUI, to alter the information to be displayed in the GUI based on a selected piece of content, and/or to enable identification of a selected piece of content from within a large number of pieces of content.

  • Publication number: 20060031880
Abstract: A graphical user interface (“GUI”) for a content management system is provided, such as to present television program information and/or information associated with other forms of multimedia content. In some situations, the GUI includes information presented simultaneously using at least first and second time scales, such as to provide relatively detailed information for content corresponding to a shorter time scale (e.g., to display television program listings with details about programs that are available during a time period at the shorter time scale) and to provide relatively limited information for content corresponding to a longer time scale (e.g., indications of other programs of potential interest at times outside the time period of the shorter time scale). In addition, in some situations the relatively limited information for content corresponding to the longer time scale may be selectable by the user to provide various functionality related to that content.
