  • Patent number: 11655183
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method for forming a glass, ceramic or composite material. The method may involve initially forming a plurality of tubes and then performing a coating operation to coat the plurality of tubes with materials containing metal or metalloid elements, including inorganic compounds, organometallic compounds, or coordination complexes to form coated tubes. The method may further include performing at least one of a thermal operation or a thermochemical operation on the coated tubes to form a solid glass, ceramic, or composite structure with dimensions representing at least one of a rod or fiber.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 11, 2020
Date of Patent: May 23, 2023
Assignee: Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC
Inventors: Andrew Lange, Jay W. Dawson, Rebecca Dylla-Spears, Cody Wren Mart, Michael J. Messerly, Koroush Sasan, Nick Schenkel, Tayyab I. Suratwala

  • Publication number: 20200024465
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a method includes forming a structure by printing an ink, the ink including a glass-forming material, and heat treating the formed structure for converting the glass-forming material to glass. According to another embodiment, an ink composition includes a glass-forming material and a solvent.

  • Publication number: 20180162746
Abstract: Dissolved silica is ubiquitous in impaired waters, a fouling agent in desalination membranes, resistant to existing antiscalants, and difficult to remove from power plant feed waters, thereby inhibiting long term reuse of industrial water. According to the present invention, an inorganic anion exchanger, hydrotalcite (HTC), can provide highly selective removal of silica from aqueous solutions. Calcined HTC effectively removes silicate anion from different waste waters and waters with high concentration of competing ions, such as SO42? and Cl?. For example, calcined Mg6Al2(OH)16(CO3).4H2O has a silica adsorption capacity of 45 mg SiO2/g HTC. Further, HTC can be easily regenerated and recycled.
