Patent number: 7350474Abstract: A sailing device suitable for a pleasure boat or the like of narrow width which is small in restoring force against traverse tilt. The sailing device is characterized by comprising a sail portion A composed of a backbone, a pair of left and right spars 3a, 3b extending obliquely backward from the fore end of the backbone 1, and a sail-cloth 8 attached at the fore edge thereof to the pair of left and right spars and at the aft end thereof to the aft end of the backbone 1, and a strut 4 extending downward from the fore end of the backbone 1. The lower end of the strut is directly mounted on the boat hull for rise and fall or indirectly attached to the boat hull by support of a user.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 2003Date of Patent: April 1, 2008Inventor: Kotaro Horiuchi

Patent number: 5199367Abstract: Two embodiments of hull designs for catamarans in which the sponsons are configured so as to provide a displacement type operation and in which the sponsons are configured so as to improve stability while reducing flow resistance. The sponsons are generally curved along their bottom surfaces and have a width that begins at a knife edge, increases gradually toward midships, then decreases with an increasing width section at the rear end thereof. In one embodiment, the sponsons are asymmetric so as to reduce the generation of waves deflected inwardly toward the main hull. In another embodiment they are symmetric. The main hull is also provided with a step at its rear end so as to avoid wave interference and the sponsons have steps at their rear ends so as to reduce front end lift when travelling at high speeds and reduce flow resistance.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1991Date of Patent: April 6, 1993Assignee: Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kotaro Horiuchi, Keiji Nakagawa, Fumitaka Yokoyama

Patent number: 4989533Abstract: A supporting strut for a hydrofoil type of watercraft that also incorporates a water inlet for a jet propulsion unit. In accordance with the invention, the strut has a generally triangular configuration and a smooth transition from the lower water inlet end to at least the water level so as to reduce turbulence and improve performance.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1989Date of Patent: February 5, 1991Assignee: Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Kotaro Horiuchi

Patent number: 4872805Abstract: A number of embodiments of water powered devices that are adapted to be positioned in a stream of moving water and which carry water wheels for driving a driven device. The driven device may comprise a generator and a number of embodiments are illustrated for holding the generator against rotation and for absorbing its torque loading. In addition, a device is provided for insuring buoyancy of the device so that the water wheels float with their axis above the level of water. In some embodiments, the buoyant device comprises a buoyant float that also provides a hydrodynamic lift and a hydrodynamic force for carrying the device to the center of the stream. In other embodiments, the device comprises a hydrodynamic device that provides both the lift and the transverse force. An arrangement is disclosed which permits stacking of the water wheels for ease of packing and additionally an arrangement is disclosed for permitting replacement of individual blades of the water wheels.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1987Date of Patent: October 10, 1989Assignee: Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kotaro Horiuchi, Masato Suzuki
