  • Patent number: 5448982
Abstract: An intake system includes a supercharger for use with a power train. The power train includes a transverse engine and a transmission disposed transversely behind the engine. The engine has first and second rows of cylinders. Cylinders in each row are intended not to be fired one after another. The first and second rows of cylinders are offset sideways relative to each other. The intake system has an individual downstream intake part, downstream from the supercharger supported by the power train, for each row of cylinders. The individual downstream intake port includes a branch intake passage, branching off downstream from the supercharger and supported by the power train, and an inter-cooler disposed in the branch intake passage. One of the inter-coolers is located on a front side of the engine, and another of the inter-coolers is located above the transmission.

  • Patent number: 5429100
Abstract: The invention provides a supercharged engine including a supercharger and an intercooler disposed downstream of the supercharger. The engine has a geometric compression ratio equal to or higher than 8.5. The supercharger is an internal compression type mechanical supercharger having a pressure ratio higher than 1.8 wherein the pressure ratio is defined as a ratio of a pressure at an inlet opening to a pressure at an exit opening of the supercharger. Intake valve closing timing of the engine supercharger is in the range of 50 to 100 degrees in crank angle as measured from bottom dead center, and an overlapping period during which both intake and exhaust valves open is equal to or below 17 degrees in crank angle wherein the intake valve closing timing is defined as the timing when valve lift is equal to or less than 1 millimeter, and the overlapping period is to be measured on the basis of a valve lift of zero.

  • Patent number: 5203309
Abstract: An intake system has an intake passage provided with a throttle valve and a supercharger for delivering a supercharger pressure to intake air engine cylinders. A bypass passage is connected to the intake passage so as to allow an intake air flow to bypass the supercharger. The intake air flow in the bypass passage is controlled by a valve, disposed in the bypass passage, which operates to variably cause the intake air to flow in the bypass passage only with a negative pressure created in the intake passage upstream of the supercharger. A pressure is applied to the valve during closing so as to cancel the supercharger pressure acting on the valve in an opening direction.

  • Patent number: 5184401
Abstract: A method of assembling a valve driving mechanism, having a variable valve timing unit incorporated in a cylindrical mounting base, to a dual overhead camshaft engine. The engine has camshafts which are rotatably connected by camshaft gears. The method includes the initial step of mounting one camshaft gear, maintained at a predetermined angular position relative to the other camshaft gear attached to the other camshaft, and a lock nut on the one camshaft. Subsequent steps include first adjusting the angular position of the mounting base relative to the one camshaft gear and then the angular position of the variable valve timing unit relative to the one camshaft, and fastening the one camshaft gear to the mounting base by the lock nut and, simultaneously, the variable valve timing unit to the one camshaft.

  • Patent number: 5121733
Abstract: An air intake system for a supercharged automotive engine has an independent air intake passage an end of which is communicated independently and separately with a combustion chamber of each cylinder and a supercharger for supercharging intake air. The air intake valve closing timing is delayed after bottom dead point and the independent air intake passage is shaped so that the number of revolutions which causes maximum inertia in the independent air intake passage by supercharging in a high-speed region is higher than the number of revolutions of the engine at which maximum horse power is generated.

  • Patent number: 5119795
Abstract: An intake system comprises an intake passage provided, in order from an upstream side of the intake passage, with a throttle valve, a mechanical compressor supercharger and an inter-cooler for delivering supercharged air discharged by the supercharger into cylinders of an internal combustion engine. The intake passage has a supercharger bypass passage for allowing an intake air flow to bypass the supercharger, and an inter-cooler bypass passage for allowing a supercharged air flow to bypass the inter-cooler. Pneumatic valves, disposed, respectively, in the supercharger and inter-cooler bypasses passages, are controlled to open both the bypass passages when the internal combustion engine operates in a range of lower loads, to open at least the supercharger bypass passage when the internal combustion engine operates in a range of medium loads, and to close both the bypass passages when the internal combustion engine operates in a range of higher loads.

  • Patent number: 5058558
Abstract: An air feeding system for a vehicle engine equipped with a supercharger comprises an inlet passage provided in an engine room with its first section interconnecting an air cleaner and a throttle valve, its second section interconnecting the throttle valve and the supercharger, and its third section interconnecting the supercharger and an engine body of the vehicle engine for feeding a cylinder in the engine body with intake air introduced through the air cleaner into the first section. The air cleaner is disposed at a front portion of one side half of the engine room and the supercharge is disposed in the other side half of the engine room. A part of the inlet passage including the first and second series is arranged to extend backward from the air cleaner and then to extend further along a dash panel forming a rear end of the engine room from one side half to the other side half of the engine room so as to reach temperature.

  • Patent number: 5022375
Abstract: In the present invention, in addition to a main throttle valve which is conventional, a sub-throttle valve for exclusive use of a mechanical supercharger is provided. By this sub-throttle valve, a flow rate of intake air is throttled by a fixed amount when the mechanical supercharger is switched from a non-connected state to a connected state. This makes it possible to prevent supercharged air from being bypassed to upstream of the supercharger through a bypass and also prevents generation of air intake noises. Moreover, in the case where the mechanical supercharger is of a type involving interior compression, at the time of the switching operation torque shock can be prevented and controllability of engine output by an accelerator pedal is improved.
