  • Patent number: 5189614
Abstract: A vehicle shock absorbing system includes a plurality of shock absorbers each having at least three control conditions. A shock sensor is associated with each absorber for detecting a shock applied to the vehicle and providing a signal indicative of the shock to a calculator which calculates an extreme value having a maximum value and a minimum value. First, second and third shock operator circuits are provided for selecting conditions for each absorber.

  • Patent number: 5160162
Abstract: An automotive shock absorber producing a variable damping force. The absorber comprises a cylinder, a piston slidably fitted in the cylinder, two hydraulic chambers partitioned from each other by the piston inside the cylinder, a passage permitting the two chambers to communicate with each other, a rotary valve capable of varying the area of the passage, an acceleration sensor fitted in the cylinder, and an electronic control unit (ECU). The ECU controls the rotary valve according to the acceleration detected by the sensor which includes a vibrating diaphragm and a piezoelectric device.

  • Patent number: 5045736
Abstract: An actuator end cap is provided for an actuator having a housing and a cover connected together and defining a joint therebetween. The end cap has a skirt portion disposed in overlying relation to the joint to provide a fluid-tight seal for the joint. A breather hole is formed in the side of the cover and a semi-cylindrical groove is formed on the inner surface of the skirt of the end cap. One end of the groove is disposed in communication with the breather hole in the cover and the other end of the groove is in communication with a vent hole extending outwardly through the end cap.

  • Patent number: 4754855
Abstract: A rotary actuator is disclosed which changes the angular position of the rotary valve which is used to determine the attenuation presented by a shock absorber. The rotary actuator is disposed within a cylindrical piston rod of the shock absorber, and comprises a power transmission mechanism for driving the rotary valve for rotation between a first and a second position within a given range, a d.c. motor for driving the mechanism, a first stop mechanism for selectively stopping the rotation of the motor at a third position which is situated centrally within the given range, and a solenoid assembly for making the first stop mechanism operative. These components are disposed within the cylindrical piston rod in the sequence named from below to above. The power transmission mechanism includes a second stop mechanism which prevents the rotary valve from rotating outside a first and a second location which determine the given range.

  • Patent number: 4702123
Abstract: A rod actuator which includes a d.c. motor, a reduction gearing, a solenoid assembly which is used to define an intermediate stop position, and rotation stops. The angular extent through which an output shaft of the reduction gearing is rotatable is limited by a pair of limit stops. The solenoid assembly includes a plunger which is located intermediate the limit stops. A rotational stop is rotatably mounted on the output shaft and has a projection which is adapted to abut against the plunger to cease the motion of the rotational stop. The rotational stop is mounted on the output shaft so as to be rotatable relative thereto through a small angle by a lost motion, but is driven for integral rotation with the output shaft when such angle is exceeded. A lost motion connector is used so the angles of rotation where the rotation of the output shaft is stopped by the plunger during its clockwise and counter-clockwise rotations will be substantially equal.
