  • Patent number: 6638898
Abstract: A process for the preparation of multi-functional additive, amino di(alkylcyclohexyl) phosphorodithioate, for use as an additive in a lubricant composition so as to impart improved coefficient of friction, wear reduction, antioxidant and extreme pressure properties, including the steps of (a) hydrogenating distilled technical cashew nut shell liquid with palladium or nickel or platinum catalyst; to fully hydrogenate the olefinic chain and aromatic ring of the precursor; (b) reacting fully hydrogenated technical cashew nut shell liquid with phosphorus pentasulfide to obtain unpolymerized hydrogenated cashew nut shell liquid phosphorodithioic acid, the reaction being carried out at a temperature ranging from 20 to 140° C. ; and (c) condensing the unpolymerized fully saturated cashew nut shell liquid phosphorodithioic acid with at least one amine to obtain the amino di(alkylcyclohexyl) phosphorodithioate.

  • Patent number: 5910468
Abstract: A process for the preparation of sulphurized calcium phenate from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). Distilled or hydrogenated distilled CNSL is reacted with calcium salt and sulphur in the presence of promoters to obtain a reaction mixture. The reaction mixture is subjected to the step of carbonation to obtain basic sulfurized calcium phenate, which may be subjected to a further step of basefication to obtain overbased sulphurized calcium phenate. Such a calcium phenate is added to lubricating oil or grease as an additive.

  • Patent number: 5854182
Abstract: Magnesium borate overbased metallic detergent having magnesium borate uniformally dispersed in an extremely fine particle size is prepared by using magnesium alkoxide and boric acid. The process for preparation involves reacting neutral sulphonate of an alkaline earth metal with magnesium alkoxide and boric acid under anhydrous conditions in the presence of a dilution solvent followed by distillation to remove alcohol and part of dilution solvent therefrom. The borated mixture is then cooled, filtered to recover magnesium borated metal detergent. The magnesium borated metal detergent exhibited excellent cleaning and dispersing performance, very good hydrolytic and oxidation stability, good extreme pressure and antiwear properties. Such a detergent can advantageously be used in a hydrocarbon composition.
