    Abstract: A novel method and apparatus for treating wastewater is described which involves the use of a downflow bioreactor filled with active anaerobic granular biomass. Influent wastewater is evenly distributed across the biomass and passes downward through the granules. The system is simple to use since it does not require the use of mixers, gas/solids/liquid separators, heat exchangers, or other sophisticated equipment. Treated water from the system has a solids content of 30 mg/L or less.
