One method of monitoring a gaming terminal comprises steps of receiving, by a companion board communicatively coupled to a gaming board of the gaming terminal, data regarding various aspects of game play at the gaming terminal; transmitting, by the companion board, the data to a communication board utilizing a first protocol; and transmitting, by the communication board, the data from the communication board to a monitoring system utilizing a second protocol.
