  • Publication number: 20030216241
Abstract: Glass is provided so as to have high visible transmission and/or fairly clear or neutral color. In certain example embodiments of making glass according to examples of the invention, the glass batch may include a base glass (e.g., soda lime silica base glass) and, in addition, by weight percentage: 1 total iron (expressed as Fe2O3):  0.01 to 0.30% erbium oxide (e.g., Er2O3):  0.01 to 0.30% cerium oxide (e.g., CeO2): 0.005 to 0.30%.

  • Publication number: 20030199384
Abstract: A high transmittance fairly clear/neutral colored glass composition is provided. An oxidizing agent(s) such as cerium oxide (e.g., CeO2) or the like is added to the glass batch in order to realize very oxidized conditions (i.e., to significantly lower the redox of the resulting glass). As a result of the oxidizing agent(s) used in the batch, the iron is oxidized to a very low FeO (ferrous state) content. For example, this may result in a glass having a glass redox value of no greater than 0.12 (more preferably <=0.10; even more preferably <=0.08; and most preferably <=0.05) and a %FeO (i.e., ferrous content) of from 0.0001 to 0.05%. In certain example embodiments, in order to compensate for yellow or yellow-green coloration a small amount of cobalt (Co) may be provided in the glass to enable it to realize a more neutral color.

  • Patent number: 6541083
Abstract: A vacuum insulating glass (IG) unit. In certain embodiments, the peripheral or edge seal may include an alkali silicate, thereby enabling low cure temperatures to be used in forming the seal. This allows tempered glass substrates to retain a significant portion of their original temper strength, even after the seal is formed. In certain alternative embodiments, at least one spacer/pillar of the vacuum IG unit may be made of or include an alkali silicate.

  • Patent number: 5779752
Abstract: The present invention pertains to an apparatus for forming glass. The apparatus comprises a mold for holding molten glass. Additionally, the apparatus comprises a mechanism for applying pressure to the molten glass in the mold. The apparatus comprises a controller for controlling the applying mechanism such that pressure is applied to the glass at predetermined times. The present invention pertains to a method for forming glass. The method comprises the steps of placing molten glass in a mold. Preferably, the placing step includes the step of placing the molten glass at a temperature greater than 800.degree. C. into the mold. Next there is the step of applying pressure greater than ambient pressure to the molten glass in the mold. Before the applying step, there is preferably the step of cooling the molten glass to a predetermined temperature. The applying step preferably includes the step of applying the pressure until the pressure reaches a peak when the molten glass is cooled to a quench temperature T.sub.
