    Abstract: The present invention recognizes denomination and transporting direction of each bill to be deposited when the bill is deposited, selectively drives two light sources with different emission colors based on the recognized information on the denomination and direction of the bill, and scans and reads the portion where the serial number of the bill being transported is printed by means of an image sensor, so that the serial number of this bill is read while selectively changing the emission color of the light source according to the denomination of the bill. Even if the character color or background color of the serial number differs depending on the denomination, the serial number can be accurately recognized without providing many light sources with different emission colors.
