  • Patent number: 7147033
Abstract: A twin-drum continuous casting apparatus for casting a metal sheet (4) by supplying molten metal (3) to a pouring basin formed by a pair of cooling drums (1) rotating in opposite directions, and side gates (2), to cool the molten metal (3) by contact with surfaces of the cooling drums (1), thereby forming a solidified shell. The cooling drum (1) is formed from a drum body (11) having shaft portions at opposite end portions, and a drum sleeve (10) fitted on an outer peripheral portion of the drum body (11). Also, means is provided for preventing various adverse influences due to differences in thermal expansion of constituent members of the drum body (11) during casting. Thus, the reliability of the apparatus is increased, and the quality of casting is improved.

  • Patent number: 5469909
Abstract: A cooling drum which can continuously cast a favorable band-shaped cast piece having little thermal deformation and a method for manufacturing the same cooling drum, are disclosed. The cooling drum comprises a three-layer structure consisting of a rigid member, a cooling member metallurgically bonded to the outside of the rigid member, and a heat-resistance member plated by electro-deposition on the outer circumferential surface of the cooling member. The rigid member is made of austenite group stainless steel, the cooling member is made of Cu or Cu-alloy, and the heat-resistance member is made of either Ni or its alloy or Co or its alloy. Within the rigid member are equipped partition walls and tubular partition walls. To the opposite end portions of the rigid member are connected hollow shafts adapted to be rotationally driven, by means of bolts after shrinkage fitting.

  • Patent number: 5400849
Abstract: The present invention provides a twin-drum type continuous casting apparatus in which, when a side weir is vibrated at a high speed, vibrations of the side weir in the axial direction of the cooling drums is suppressed. The generation of run-out from a cast piece is prevented, and the elongation of the lives of the side weirs and the refractory materials is made possible. A pair of side weirs vibrating along end surfaces of cooling drums are characterized in that a support shaft serving as a center of rotation of the vibrations of the side weirs is disposed lower than the molten metal surface and higher than a minimum gap position of the cooling drums. A vibration exciting shaft for applying vibration to the side weir is disposed lower than the above-mentioned minimum gap position.

  • Patent number: 5368088
Abstract: Molten metal is supplied to a pouring basin formed between cooling members, such as movable cooling drums. A closed space is formed at a meniscus area whereat any one of the cooling members starts to come into contact with the molten metal, and a soluble gas or a mixture of soluble and insoluble gases is supplied to and filled in the closed space, thereby covering the meniscus area with the gas or the mixture. This arrangement enables a continuous casting of a thin metal sheet without surface cracks and having excellent surface characteristics.

  • Patent number: 5052467
Abstract: A control device for a twin-roll continuous caster, comprising a plurality of maps, each of which teaches a relationship between a thickness of a cast strip and a roll separating force under a fixed casting speed, and teaches stable casting conditions under which bulging and surface cracks do not occur. The device detects a cast thickness and a height of the molten pool and selects an appropriate map from among the plurality of maps, by the detected height, and controls the casting conditions such that a target thickness of the cast strip is obtained under stable casting conditions by using the selected map.

  • Patent number: 4075890
Abstract: A device for detecting the level of the molten metal surface within a continuous casting mold. A detector element consisting of a body of a thermosensitive magnetic material, the magnetic properties of which vary in response to a temperature variation, is mounted at an appropriate position on a side wall of the continuous casting mold, and an electromagnetic coil for detecting the magnetic flux in the detector element is contained within a detector box mounted in a water jacket surrounding the mold at a position opposed to the detector element. The molten metal surface level within the mold is detected by detecting a change in the magnetic properties of the detector element by means of the electromagnetic coil. The detector box is detachably mounted in the water jacket, and water supply inlet and outlet means in the detector box guide cooling water through the detector box for cooling the electromagnetic coil within the detector box.
