Patent number: 5238888Abstract: Provided are carbon molecular sieves produced by treating carbonacious materials with plasma. One of their most important uses is adsorbent for pressure swing adsorption processes, which are widely used for the separation of gases on industrial scales. The carbon molecular sieves meet the strong demand in this field where the performance of the adsorbent used governs the efficiency of gas separation. The carbon molecular sieves of the present invention are particularly effective in separating nitrogen gas from air.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1992Date of Patent: August 24, 1993Assignee: Kuraray Chemical Co., Ltd.Inventor: Kunio Abe

Novel polyvinyl alcohol and process for producing polyvinyl alcohol by hydrolysis catalyzed by acids
Patent number: 5047469Abstract: The polyvinyl alcohol of the present invention is a partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol having a saponification degree of 70 to 98 mol % and containing a larger amount of methanol-soluble substances than that contained in polyvinyl alcohols having the same saponification degree obtained by known processes, and is novel. And, the process for producing polyvinyl alcohol of the present invention comprises saponifying polyvinyl esters in a solvent of a polyoxyalkylene ether having in the molecule thereof a structural unit represented by the general formula [I]:--O).sub.l (R.sup.1 --O).sub.m (R.sup.2 --O).sub.n [I]wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each represents an alkylene group having 2 to 5 carbon atoms in the main chain thereof, which may be substituted with a lower alkyl group or lower alkoxy group; l is an integer of 0 or 1; m and n each represents 0 or an integer of 1 to 10; and l+m+n.gtoreq.2; with the catalyst of an aliphatic or aromatic sulfonic acid at an elevated temperature in the presence of water.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1989Date of Patent: September 10, 1991Assignee: Kuraray Co., Ltd.Inventors: Takanori Kitamura, Yuuji Takenouchi, Kunio Abe -
Patent number: 5034324Abstract: A hydrated gel of high water content and high porosity containing an immobilized microorganism is prepared by dropwise addition of an aqueous solution containing a microorganism, polyvinyl alcohol and a polysaccharide to an aqueous solution containing polyvalent metal ions to gel the polysaccharide and form spherical gel beads, and subjecting the beads to at least one cycle of freezing and thawing to gel the polyvinyl alcohol. The polysaccharide can be sodium alginate and the polyvalent metal ions can be provided by calcium chloride. Freezing is at a temperature not higher than -5.degree. C., and the cycle of freezing and thawing is preferably repeated at least two times.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1988Date of Patent: July 23, 1991Assignee: Kuraray Company, Ltd.Inventors: Atushi Shinozaki, Kunio Abe

Patent number: 4990319Abstract: A process for producing NH.sub.3 and SO.sub.2 from ammonium sulfate, which comprises(i) reacting ammonium sulfate with a metal oxide or hydroxide at a temperature of not more than 200.degree. C. to form NH.sub.3, water and a metal sulfate and recovering NH.sub.3,(ii) decomposing the metal sulfate in the presence of a reducing agent to form a metal oxide and SO.sub.2 and recovering SO.sub.2, and(iii) recycling the metal oxide to step (i) as such or after it is converted to a metal hydroxide.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1989Date of Patent: February 5, 1991Assignees: Kuraray Co., Ltd., Kyowa Gas Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., JGC CorporationInventors: Youji Takenouchi, Katsuhiko Nishiguchi, Kunio Abe

Patent number: 4580257Abstract: A dual drive system for an automatic record player of a type in which programmed music selection can be carried out. The drive system includes a mechanical first drive system for mechanically driving the pickup arm and an electromagnetic second drive system for driving the pickup arm using an electromagnetic force. Circuitry is provided for selecting between the two drive systems in accordance with the selected operational mode of the player or the position of the pickup arm.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1983Date of Patent: April 1, 1986Assignee: Pioneer Electronic CorporationInventors: Takashi Kikuchi, Shinya Takahashi, Masao Ono, Toshio Hirano, Atsuo Ikeda, Kunio Abe

Patent number: 4530081Abstract: A record player comprises a player cabinet and a slide base supporting a turntable and movably mounted in the player cabinet for movement into and out of the latter. The record player also includes a front door movably supported by the player cabinet for movement between a vertical position in which the front door closes an open front face of the player cabinet and a horizontal position within the player cabinet. When the front door is opened, it is withdrawn back into the player cabinet so that the front door will not interfere with operator's activities to manipulate the record player. The front door may be pivotably supported by swing levers so that the front door can easily be opened and closed without striking a top plate of the player cabinet. The front door may be actuated by a mechanism operatively connected to a substantially central portion of the front door laterally thereof for smoothly actuating the front door without distorting the front door while it is being opened or closed.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1982Date of Patent: July 16, 1985Assignee: Pioneer Electronic CorporationInventors: Satoshi Sakurai, Yoshio Takahashi, Kunio Abe
