  • Patent number: 4877379
Abstract: A rotary mechanism for a three-dimensional volumetric change including a rotor having a partially spherical surface as a bottom surface and a substantially conical surface which includes a plurality of apexes extending substantially radially, and a member having a curved surface constituted by a surface defined by a locus of the apex due to precessing motion of the rotor. A space defined in a spherical space and having its volume changed by relative precessing motion between the member and the rotor serves as a working space. The rotor is substantially spherical cone with apexes and the curved surface of the member is a spherical peritrochoidal surface. The rotor conical surface is optimumly an inner envelope of the spherical peritrochoidal surface produced by the relative precession. The rotary mechanism may be expansion and/or compression machine; pump, blower or internal combustion engine, or generally, energy conversion machine.
