    Abstract: Example communication methods and apparatus are described. One example method includes receiving a reference signal from a network device by a terminal device. The reference signal has an association relationship with a weight matrix and a channel between the network device and the terminal device, a quantity of rows or columns of the weight matrix is N, and N is a positive integer less than or equal to a quantity of receive ports of the terminal device. The terminal device determines an estimation result of the weight matrix based on the reference signal, where the estimation result of the weight matrix is used by the terminal device to perform signal detection on a data signal received by the terminal device from the network device, or is used by the terminal device to precode a data signal sent by the terminal device to the network device.

A reference signal corresponding to the first port index is mapped to a first resource group in the time-frequency unit in response to determining that a port corresponding to the first port index belongs to a first port group, or the reference signal corresponding to the first port index is mapped to a second resource group in the time-frequency unit in response to determining that a port corresponding to the first port index belongs to a second port group. The reference signal is sent.

The terminal device can indicate a position and a numerical value of an element in the first coefficient set by reporting only the first codeword. This manner is simple. In addition, a codeword length of the first codeword is shorter than a codeword length of the second codeword.

Using the CSI-RS to measure the path loss differs from using a common CRS in that the CSI-RS may be aimed at a specific base station. Therefore, path loss measurement may be performed with respect to a target base station of uplink transmission, enabling the path loss compensation to match the actual path loss, thus improving the performance of uplink power control.
