  • Patent number: 6886679
Abstract: An axial setting device having two discs (24, 29) which are rotatable relative to one another, which are supported coaxially relative to one another and between which there are guided balls (35) in pairs of ball grooves (34, 39) whose depth varies across the circumference. One of the discs (24, 29) is axially supported and one is axially displaceable against elastic returning forces of first spring (33). At least one of the discs can be driven by a motor (11) via a gear drive. During the return movement of the discs (24, 29) after the balls (35) have reached their end position in the ball grooves, which end position is defined by the greatest groove depth, a second spring permits overshooting of the drivable disc (24) together with the disc (29) supported with respect to rotation against elastic returning forces of the second spring.

  • Patent number: 6864596
Abstract: A turbine installation configured for large scale hydrogen production includes a foundation structure separating an upper elevation headwater from a lower elevation tailwater. The foundation structure defines a water passageway extending therethrough between an inlet adjacent the headwater and an outlet adjacent the tailwater. A runner is supported for rotation by the foundation and disposed in the water passageway intermediate the inlet and the outlet so that water flowing through the passageway as a result of head differential causes rotation of the runner. A generator is supported by the foundation and connected to the runner by a rotary shaft for generating electrical power as the runner rotates. An electrolyzer is electrically coupled to the generator for receiving the electrical power and producing hydrogen.

  • Patent number: 6841893
Abstract: A method is provided for operating a hydroelectric power generating facility configured for operating in first and second operating modes. The facility includes a turbine driven power generating unit receiving a flow of water through an upstream conduit to generate electrical power. The method comprises computing a first economic value for the generated electrical power when operating in the first operating mode, and computing a second economic value for the generated electrical power when operating in the second operating mode. The method further comprises comparing the first economic value with the second economic value to identify the operating mode that provides the higher economic value, and operating the turbine facility in the identified operating mode.

  • Patent number: 6559448
Abstract: The passive infrared detector contains a heat-sensitive sensor and a focusing device for focusing thermal rays incident on the detector from the room under surveillance onto the sensor. The focusing device has focusing elements for surveillance regions having different positions in the room under surveillance. Each focusing element comprises a number of sub-elements, with the result that the surveillance regions are split up vertically into subzones having slightly different elevation. In a majority of the surveillance regions, the subzones overlap at most only slightly. Human being and animals are distinguished by the amplitude of the sensor signal which is proportional to the number of subzones interrupted by the object in the room under surveillance. The number of sub-elements and correspondingly the number of subzones increases with decreasing radial distance of the respective surveillance region from the detector.

  • Patent number: 6456379
Abstract: A detector device for detecting the presence of airborne particles such as smoke includes a light source, an optical bridge, a measurement path, a reference path, a measurement receiver and a reference receiver. The optical bridge, in addition to the light source and the measurement and reference receivers, are the only optical elements of the detector device. The optical bridge includes two circular apertures arranged downstream of the light source along the radiation path. The light source is arranged in a chamber having an air reservoir, whose surface area is substantially greater than that of the light source. A temperature drift curve is determined by heating the light source and storing the detector signal at different temperatures.

  • Patent number: 4770356
Abstract: A filament winder of the automatic exchange type in which chucks are brought successively into winding positions relative to a friction drive roller and thread is transferred from a package on an outgoing chuck to a bobbin on an incomming chuck. Each chuck moves along its own predetermined path towards and away from the friction drive roller. A free thread length is created between the friction drive roller and the outgoing chuck and this free thread length is intercepted by thread catching means on the incoming chuck.

  • Patent number: 4755973
Abstract: A space surveillance apparatus includes at least one source of sonic radiation driven by a driver circuit as well as a processing or evaluation circuit. Upon movement of an object, or presence of a foreign object within a monitored space, the processing circuit triggers an alarm signal. Each sonic source defines the volume of its own monitored space, according to the equation:L=D.sup.2 /(4.lambda.),wherein:L=Length of main direction of radiation of the monitored space;D=Diameter of diaphragm of sonic source; and.lambda.=Wavelength of acoustic wave. The driver circuit drives the sonic source either in continuous mode, or in pulsed mode, and either at a constant wavelength or at a variable wavelength, i.e. in frequency modulation.

  • Patent number: 4166619
Abstract: An arrowhead, spearhead, integral arrow or spear, or other projectile for hunting, with a point of efficient penetrating design and having moveable sharpened blades, pivotally mounted within a slot in the head. The arrangement provides shrouding of the functional cutting surfaces of the moveable blades when they are in a beginning, closed and positively locked position. In response to impact with and penetration into a target, the blades automatically unlock and pivot outward from the enshrouded configuration to a second position where they are fully extended and may perform their cutting function.
