    Abstract: A method and material for forming phosphate conversion coatings on ferrous metals such as iron and steel or non-ferrous metals such as zinc and aluminum employes aqueous acidic solutions containing a metal phosphate such as zinc phosphate, an accelerator such as sodium nitrite, and a crystal refining material which is an acidic organic phosphate or phosphonate having at least one free alcoholic hydroxyl group and where the phosphate is derived from a cyclic or branched chain organic alcohol.

  • Method for manufacturing water glass cement hardeners

    Abstract: Condensed aluminum phosphates, useful as hardeners for water glass cements, are prepared in a solid state reaction by dry mixing aluminum hydroxide with an ammonium phosphate, heating the mixture at an initial temperature below 250.degree. C. for longer than about 2 hours and then raising the temperature in stages to at least about 400.degree. C. so as to minimize foaming and to avoid any liquefaction of the mixture during the reaction.

  • Rolling oil compositions and method of inhibiting carbon smut on batch annealed steel

    Abstract: Carbon smut on post-annealed cold rolled steel sheet and strip is inhibited by a process using a rolling oil containing from 0.5 to 5% by weight of specific organic nitro compounds in the cold rolling oil. The steel sheet and strip are substantially smut free after batch annealing. Rolling oils and their aqueous emulsions containing the organic nitro inhibitors are also disclosed and claimed.
