  • Patent number: 11378123
Abstract: In accordance with one aspect of the present disclosure, a turbocharger having a rolling element bearing (REB) assembly contained within a bearing housing includes an axial damper configured to dampen and limit axial displacement of the REB assembly. The axial damper can include different embodiments, including an elastomeric axial damper, wire mesh, or oil film, for interrupting contact between the bearing assembly and a displacement limit when an axial displacement force exceeds a preload force. Further, the axial damper can include an apparatus having at least two axially compressible rings, where one of the axially compressible rings includes a displacement limit feature.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 18, 2019
Date of Patent: July 5, 2022
    Assignee: BorgWarner Inc.
Inventors: Allan Douglas Kelly, Kurt Henderson, Michael Sean Ward

  • Patent number: 9995158
Abstract: A turbocharger (10) for an internal combustion engine includes a symmetric twin-volute turbine housing (12) having first and second volutes (16, 18). A turbine wheel (22) is disposed within the symmetric twin-volute turbine housing (12) for rotation about a turbocharger axis (R1). A nozzle ring (42, 58) is fixedly secured to the symmetric twin-volute turbine housing (12). The nozzle ring (42, 58) includes a plurality of fixed vanes (44, 62, 66) disposed circumferentially around the turbocharger axis (R1). The plurality of fixed vanes (44, 62, 66) form nozzle passages leading from at least one of the first and second volutes (16, 18) to the turbine wheel (22) for directing exhaust gas against the turbine wheel (22) at an optimum angle.

  • Patent number: 9915270
Abstract: A turbocharger (10) having a compressor housing (15) and a bearing housing (17). The compressor housing (15) including an elliptical shaped wall (16) extending between an air inlet (11) and a volute (13) formed by the compressor housing (15). The bearing housing (17) forms a flat bearing housing wall (14) opposing the compressor wall (16) wherein the compressor wall (16) and bearing housing wall (14) form an elliptical diffuser (12) between the air inlet (11) and the volute (13).
