    Abstract: A self-contained underwater drainage system is disclosed for the automatic draining of water from a container while submerged in a pool of water. The container assembly is constructed of a container for receiving nuclear fuel pellets or other radiation emitting material and a closure to be received within the container. The closure is provided with a liquid egress path communicating between the interior and exterior of the container. A self-contained source of compressed gas within the closure is discharged into the interior of the container for draining the water therefrom through the liquid egress path upon operation of the piston rod by means of its engagement with a portion of the container during use.
