    Abstract: A single-pass color electrophotographic printer includes four imaging stations, yellow, cyan, magenta, and black, on a generally linear path. A toned image in each toner color is developed on an image bearing member or photoconductive drum. A plurality of electrically biased first transfer rollers associated with each imaging station is operative to transfer the developed images from the photoconductive drum to an intermediate transfer member (ITM) belt that travels sequentially past the imaging stations along the generally linear path in a first transfer operation. The image on the ITM belt is transferred to media at a second transfer operation at which the ITM belt passes through a nip between a backup roller and a further electrically biased transfer roller. A servo operation is used to set the voltages on the transfer rollers. Rollers at the second transfer are positioned to direct media downwardly out of the nip to a media transport belt and to a fuser assembly.

    Abstract: An end seal for use in an electrophotographic image forming apparatus uses an array of ridges (or grooves) to urge toner inwardly so as to help prevent toner escape. The end seal works in conjunction with a cleaning blade. The end seal includes a blade pocket for mating with the end portions of the cleaning blade and a middle portion having an array of ridges thereon. The ridges are angled inward to urge any toner trapped therebetween inward away from the end seals, where the toner can be directed to a waste reservoir in a normal fashion. This “snowplowing” action of the ridges helps prevent outward migration of toner, thereby minimizing toner escape. The end seal may be composed of two or more layers of differing materials. There may be an end seal at each end of the cleaner blade.

    Abstract: Each sheet of a stack of media is aligned with a fixed alignment surface prior to being fed towards a process station of a printer by a single pick roll. During the first portion of its cycle of operation, the sheet advancing force of the pick roll, which is offset from the axis or centerline of the sheet, exerts a torque on at least the uppermost sheet of the stack to have one of its sides engage the alignment surface if it is skewed. When the one side of the sheet is not engaging the alignment surface when the pick roll is initially energized, the uppermost sheet's leading edge engages a resilient projection of an insert of a rib, which is offset from the axis of the sheet but farther from the alignment surface than the pick roll. The skewed sheet pivots about the projection, which is formed of a high coefficient of friction material, extending beyond the surface of the rib. During the remainder of its energization, the pick roll advances the sheet towards the process station of the printer.
