Patent number: 9251309Abstract: A method includes recording a current performance signature for first and second components in a system, recording a calibrated baseline performance signature for the components, and processing the performance signatures through an aging model to determine a future performance signature for each component. The future performance signatures are processed through a system function model to determine the state of function of the system for each possible repair case. A cost-optimal repair case is then determined from among the possible repair cases, and recorded in memory. An apparatus includes first and second components of a system, and a host machine configured for processing the current and baseline performance signatures through the aging and system function models as noted above. The cost-optimal repair case is determined from among all possible repair cases, and then recorded in memory. An example system may be a cranking system with a starter motor and battery.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2011Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Kwang-Keun Shin, Mutasim A. Patent number: 8265850Abstract: A host vehicle's speed is controlled with a target vehicle following control system when following a target vehicle. The target vehicle following control system monitors a range with respect to a target vehicle and a speed of the host vehicle. The target vehicle following device determines operation of the vehicle based upon a control region by comparing the range and the speed of the host vehicle to a simple sliding surface, which defines a minimum range between the host vehicle and target vehicle and a modified sliding surface, which increases the margin to the simple sliding surface as the speed of the host vehicle increases. The host vehicle has an acceleration determined based on the control region and is used to control operation of the host vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2010Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventor: Kwang-Keun Shin

Patent number: 8234036Abstract: A system and method for determining the state of health of a starter motor to notify a vehicle driver of a potential starter motor failure before the failure actually occurs. The starter motor includes an armature and motor brushes each providing a resistance, and an armature coil providing an armature inductance. Further, the starter motor has a back EMF because of the starter motor being coupled to a flywheel and the vehicle engine. The system and method monitor the combined resistance of the armature and the motor brushes, the inductance of the armature and a back EMF constant of the motor, and provide a signal indicating a potential starter motor failure if any of these three values significantly deviates from nominal values. In one embodiment, the analysis of the motor resistance, armature inductance and back EMF constant is provided by a regression model to determine estimated motor parameters.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2009Date of Patent: July 31, 2012Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventor: Kwang-Keun Shin

Patent number: 8192036Abstract: A system and method for automatically correcting the viewing angle of a rear-view mirror on a vehicle towing a trailer when the vehicle is traveling around a curve. If the dimensions of the trailer are unknown, then the corrected viewing angle is the same as the hitch angle between the vehicle and the trailer. If the dimensions of the trailer are known, then trigonometry is used to determine the corrected viewing angle. Depending on whether the road is curving to the right or to the left will determine whether the left side rear-view mirror or the right side rear-view mirror is adjusted.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2008Date of Patent: June 5, 2012Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Jin-Woo Lee, Jihan Ryu, Kwang-Keun Shin, Bakhtiar Brian Litkouhi

Patent number: 8167444Abstract: A system and method for automatically correcting the viewing angle of a rear-view mirror on a vehicle when the vehicle is traveling around a curve. The system estimates the curvature of the road using only vehicle speed and vehicle steering angle information. The road curvature estimation is used to determine the radius of curvature of the road, which can then be used to determine the corrected viewing angle of the rear-view mirror. Depending on whether the road is curving to the right or to the left will determine whether the left side rear-view mirror or the right side rear-view mirror will be adjusted.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2008Date of Patent: May 1, 2012Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Jin-Woo Lee, Kwang-Keun Shin, Jihan Ryu, Bakhtiar Brian Litkouhi
